Europe’s last divided capital city

Nicosia stands as Cyprus’s capital, split by a UN buffer zone that divides Greek and Turkish communities. The city reflects centuries of cultural exchange along the Mediterranean. Historic neighborhoods feature Ottoman mosques alongside Venetian walls, while modern cafes line streets where ancient trade routes once crossed. Local markets sell fresh produce and spices, connecting visitors to traditions still alive today. Government buildings stand near bustling squares, showing how politics and daily life coexist in this unique urban space shaped by diverse influences over time.

Why travel to Nicosia?

Nicosia is a must for anyone who loves cities with stories. It’s the world’s last divided capital, with the UN Buffer Zone (Green Line) running through the heart of the old town-a living reminder of Cyprus’s complex past. Here, you can stroll Venetian walls, explore Byzantine and Ottoman architecture and visit museums packed with ancient treasures. The city is also the gateway to Northern Cyprus, making it uniquely positioned for cultural discovery. Downsides? Nicosia doesn’t have beaches and can get very hot in summer. Crossing the Green Line requires ID and some areas near the buffer zone feel gritty or less lively at night. Still, the blend of cultures, history and local hospitality make Nicosia an unforgettable stop.
