Why travel to Kyrenia?

Kyrenia’s old harbor is postcard-perfect, lined with boats, cafes and bars, all overlooked by the mighty Kyrenia Castle. The city’s blend of Greek, Ottoman and Venetian heritage is everywhere, from quiet churches to bustling bazaars. Just outside town, you’ll find fairytale castles like St. Hilarion perched high in the mountains and golden beaches perfect for lazy afternoons. The nightlife is lively, the food is fresh and the sunsets are unforgettable. On the flip side, Kyrenia can get crowded in peak season and ongoing political tensions mean you’ll see a visible military presence and sometimes need to navigate checkpoints if crossing from the Republic of Cyprus. Some areas near military zones are off-limits for photos or wandering and development means parts of the harbor can be under renovation. Still, the city feels safe and welcoming and most visitors have a relaxed, trouble-free stay.

Knowledge before you go

  • Explore Kyrenia Harbour. Stroll boats, dine on fresh seafood.

  • Note Northern Cyprus location: check travel advisories, insurance and border crossing rules from Republic.
  • Head to Bellapais Abbey nearby for Gothic ruins and mountain views, quieter than harbor attractions.

How to travel to Kyrenia

Most visitors arrive via Ercan International Airport (about 50 minutes by car or shuttle) or cross from the Republic of Cyprus through designated checkpoints (the closest is in Nicosia). Buses connect Kyrenia to Nicosia, Famagusta and other towns, but schedules can be irregular. Guided transfers and taxis are also popular.

Access summary

  • From Ercan Airport (ECN): Taxi or transfer, usually 40–60 minutes.
  • From Larnaca: Cross-border taxi or shuttle via Nicosia, about 1–1.5 hours.
  • From Nicosia: Shared minibuses and taxis to Kyrenia, roughly 30–45 minutes.

Where to stay in Kyrenia

Kyrenia offers everything from boutique hotels in old stone buildings to modern resorts with pools and sea views. There are also budget guesthouses and family-run pensions, especially near the harbor. Book ahead in summer and during festivals, as popular spots fill quickly.

How to get around Kyrenia

Kyrenia’s old town and harbor are best explored on foot – everything is close and walkable. To visit outlying castles, beaches or mountain villages, rent a car or use local minibuses (dolmuş), which run frequently along the coast. Taxis are readily available, but there’s no longer a bicycle rental shop in town.
