The Pearl of the Adriatic

Dubrovnik stands along Croatia’s southern coast with stone walls that have protected its historic center for centuries. The city is surrounded by turquoise waters and green hills, making it easy to walk between old squares, churches and quiet cafes. Local markets sell fresh seafood and regional cheeses while nearby islands invite day trips by ferry. Walking the ramparts gives views of the Adriatic Sea and a sense of how history shaped this compact yet lively place.

Knowledge before you go

  • Walk the city walls early morning or near sunset for comfort.
  • Summer brings intense heat and cruise crowds, so prebook accommodation, wall tickets and cable-car rides well ahead.
  • Wear sturdy shoes; Old Town streets are polished stone, often slippery, with many steps leading to viewpoints and restaurants.
  • Stay inside or just outside the Old Town to enjoy quieter late-night strolls, softer lighting and near-empty alleys after day-trippers leave.

How to travel to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is about 20 km from the city center, with shuttle buses and taxis available. Ferries connect Dubrovnik to other Croatian cities and Italy. Buses run from nearby European countries and Croatian cities to Dubrovnik's main bus station.

Access summary

  • From Dubrovnik Airport (DBV): Shuttle bus to Old Town, about 30–40 minutes.
  • From Split: Long-distance buses or summer catamaran ferries, roughly 4.5–6 hours.
  • Island trips: Ferries to Elaphiti Islands or Hvar, usually 45 minutes–3.5 hours.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik offers a mix of luxury hotels, charming guesthouses and holiday apartments. The Old Town is convenient but pricier, while Lapad and Babin Kuk offer more budget-friendly and family-oriented options.

How to get around Dubrovnik

The Old Town is best explored on foot. For longer distances, use local buses (Libertas Dubrovnik) or taxis. Boat services connect nearby islands. Avoid driving in the Old Town due to limited access and parking.
