Ancient Shores, Flamingos and Sun

Larnaca stands out as a coastal city on Cyprus’s southeastern shore. The port area features colorful fishing boats and quiet waterfront cafes where locals gather in the morning to drink coffee or play chess by the sea. Ancient churches, such as St. Lazarus, showcase Byzantine architecture with marble floors and gold-leaf icons. Walking along the promenade reveals Ottoman-era buildings alongside modern shops selling spices, olives and handmade lace. The city’s historic cemetery holds graves from multiple cultures reflecting centuries of diverse influences in this Mediterranean crossroads.

Why travel to Larnaca?

Larnaca is a fantastic blend of history, relaxation and local color. You can stroll the palm-fringed Finikoudes Beach promenade, explore the 9th-century Church of St. Lazarus or dive the famous Zenobia shipwreck. The city’s salt lake is a must in winter for flamingo-spotting, while the bustling marina and lively old town are perfect for wandering, shopping and sampling Cypriot cuisine. Larnaca is less polished than some resort towns, but that’s part of its charm. Summer can be very hot and crowded and some archaeological sites are less well-preserved than elsewhere in Cyprus. Watch for jellyfish in the sea at times and be mindful of the strong sun and occasional pickpocketing in busy areas.
