Gateway to Algarve’s Islands & History

The Algarve region in southern Portugal centers around Faro, a coastal city known for its mild climate and sandy beaches. Visitors find historic sites like the 18th-century Sé Cathedral alongside modern cafes along the waterfront. The area features limestone cliffs shaped by wind and sea, creating natural arches and hidden coves. Local markets sell fresh seafood and regional cheeses. Faro serves as a gateway to nearby islands such as Ilha de Santa Maria, where walking paths follow ancient walls. The mix of culture, nature and relaxed lifestyle draws travelers seeking both activity and calm.

Why travel to Faro?

Faro is the Algarve’s underrated gem. Beyond its airport, you’ll find a compact old town (Vila Adentro) packed with Roman and Moorish history, a stunning cathedral with panoramic views and quirky sights like the bone chapel at Igreja do Carmo. The city is also the gateway to the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a haven for birdwatchers and beach lovers, with boat trips to deserted islands and seafood feasts straight from the sea. Faro is walkable, friendly and less touristy than other Algarve hotspots. The beaches aren’t in the city itself-you’ll need to hop a boat or bus – but the journey is half the fun. Some areas of the modern city are less charming and in high summer, the islands can get crowded. Still, for a blend of culture, nature and authentic Portuguese life, Faro is hard to beat.
