Alpine old town near the royal castles

Füssen is a small town in the Allgäu on the Austrian border, where the Romantic Road ends. Its old town has a castle of the Augsburg prince-bishops and a former Benedictine abbey with a museum. The Lech River breaks through a narrow gorge at the edge of town and the Forggensee reservoir is close by. It's also the closest town to the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, with a train station and buses to both. The old town can be seen in half a day, so Füssen suits two or three days that mix town, lake and a castle visit.

Why travel to Füssen?

Füssen is an old town at the foot of the Alps, where the Romantic Road ends, close to the border with Austria. The old town is small enough to walk in an afternoon, with the High Castle (Hohes Schloss) above it, the former summer residence of the Augsburg prince-bishops. Its galleries show paintings and the tower gives a view over the roofs. Next to it, the former Benedictine abbey of St. Mang now holds the town museum, with the Kaisersaal and a small chapel painted with a Dance of Death. The Lech River is the second reason to stop. At the Lechfall it breaks through the narrow Füssener Enge gorge. The Lechweg long-distance trail ends here. The Forggensee, a reservoir covering about 16 km², is close to town and has ships in summer and autumn. The north shore has the warmest water for swimming, since the Lech brings cold meltwater in near Füssen. The royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are in Schwangau, a short bus ride away, which makes Füssen a handy base. Munich is only about two hours away by train, but staying a night or two leaves more time for the old town and the lake. Two or three days covers the town, the lake and a castle visit comfortably.

Knowledge before you go

  • Overnight guests usually get a card covering local buses and some trains.
  • The Bayern-Ticket from Munich also covers the Füssen buses, but on weekdays it's valid only from 09:00.
  • When the A7 backs up before Füssen, leave at Nesselwang and take the B309 and B310.
  • Füssen has a long lute-making tradition and the town museum in the former abbey has a noted instrument collection.

How to travel to Füssen

Regional trains from Munich Hauptbahnhof reach Füssen in about two hours roughly once an hour, with no seat reservations needed. Füssen is the end of the line, so the station is also where the local buses start. From other cities, take an ICE or IC train to Munich or Augsburg and change to a regional train. Munich Airport (MUC) is the main airport. The trip from there takes a little over three hours with a change in Munich. Flixbus coaches also run from Munich to Füssen. By car, Füssen is where the A7, Germany's longest motorway at 961 km, ends. The B16, B17 and B310 also lead to Füssen. The Fernpass road (B179) leads to it from Tyrol in Austria. Driving from Munich takes about two hours.

Access summary

  • From Memmingen (FMM): Train or shuttle via Kaufbeuren, roughly 1.5–2 hours.
  • From Munich: Train via Buchloe, typically around 2–2.5 hours total.
  • From Innsbruck: Train and regional connections through Garmisch, usually about 2.5–3 hours.

Where to stay in Füssen

Most visitors stay in the old town or just outside it, where the choice runs from hotels and guesthouses to holiday apartments. Staying near the station is practical if you arrive by train and plan to use buses, while the streets around the old town put the restaurants and the museum within walking distance. Schwangau and Hohenschwangau, closer to the castles, have their own hotels and guesthouses. Villages on the lakes, such as Hopfen am See and Weißensee, are quieter and have bike hire. Campsites and farm stays are available around the Forggensee and in the surrounding Allgäu countryside. Rooms are scarcest from spring through autumn and during school holidays, so it helps to book ahead for those periods. A car is useful if you stay in a village away from the station, since buses there run less often than in town.

How to get around Füssen

Füssen's old town is compact and the train station is a short walk from it. In town you can walk everywhere, while buses cover the lake, the castle area and nearby villages.

Buses:
The allgäumobil network runs the local buses.
Line 78 goes from Füssen via Schwangau to Hohenschwangau and on to the Tegelberg, with late buses in July and August. The ride to Hohenschwangau takes about 8 minutes.

Bikes:
Shops in Füssen, Hopfen am See and Weißensee hire out bikes and e-bikes.
E-bike charging is available at the tourist office.

Car:
Parking is paid and you can use the Parkster app at municipal car parks.
Follow the guidance signs to the numbered lots around the old town. The Morisse lot (P3) is about a 5-minute walk away.

Taxis:
Taxicenter Füssen operates locally and a shared call-and-collect taxi service also runs, which can help when buses are infrequent or you want to reach a village.

Food in Füssen

Food in Füssen is Allgäu and Bavarian cooking, with cheese, dumplings, pork and Brotzeit (a cold plate with bread, cheese and sausage) on many menus. The best-known local dish is Käsespätzle (Kässpatzen in the Allgäu dialect), soft egg noodles layered with strong mountain cheese and topped with fried onions. It's also a good meat-free choice for vegetarians.

Dairy farming is a big part of the Allgäu, so cheese and milk products are everywhere in shops and on menus. For regional dishes, traditional inns in the old town and the nearby villages are the best bet. Supermarkets and bakeries make picnics and self-catering easy, which helps on days at the lake or on a hike.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Füssen is very safe for visitors. Pickpocketing can happen in the crowds around the castles and the old town on summer days, so keep bags closed. In the mountains the main risk is weather, with sudden storms in summer and snow outside it.
Health & Medical
8
Medical care is good, with doctors and pharmacies in town and larger hospitals in Kaufbeuren and Kempten. Ticks in forests and meadows can carry tick-borne encephalitis and parts of the Allgäu are risk areas, so cover up on hikes and ask a doctor about vaccination.
Accessibility
5
Füssen's old town is compact but has cobblestones and slopes, especially towards the High Castle. Buses have marked wheelchair spaces that can't be reserved and may be shared with pushchairs and bikes. Lakeside paths are mostly flat but mountain trails are steep and uneven.
Tap water
10
Tap water in Füssen is safe to drink. It's often hard in this limestone region, which leaves limescale but doesn't affect safety. Water from streams and the Lech isn't treated, so on hikes carry a bottle filled at your hotel or at a hut.
