Fairytale castles below the Alps

Schwangau is a small village in the Allgäu at the foot of the Alps and the home of the castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Visitors can tour the castles with a guide, walk to the Marienbrücke for the classic view or swim in the Alpsee. The Tegelberg cable car and the Forggensee lake add mountain and water options. Trains stop at nearby Füssen and local buses link the station to the village in about ten minutes. If you want to see the castles without a big crowd, go early in the day or stay overnight.

Neuschwanstein tickets are timed and often sell out, book online weeks ahead from April to October
Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) is often closed in winter due to ice and snow

Why travel to Schwangau?

The two castles are the reason almost everyone comes. Neuschwanstein sits on a rock above the village and is the fairytale castle that King Ludwig II built in the 19th century. Hohenschwangau lies below it on a smaller hill and was the childhood home of the king. Both can be visited only on a guided tour and tickets are sold online with a limited number left each day at the ticket centre. The setting is as good as the buildings. The Alpsee is a clear mountain lake with a path around it and the Marienbrücke is a bridge over the gorge with a famous view of Neuschwanstein. The Museum of the Bavarian Kings sits on the shore of the Alpsee and tells the story of the royal family. The Tegelberg cable car climbs to a mountain top with hiking trails and paragliding launches. The village itself is small and quiet outside the day trip crowds. The Forggensee lake lies to the north and the old town of Füssen is a short ride away. A day covers the castles and the bridge while two days leave time for a hike or the lake. Summer is the busiest season and winter is quieter with snow on the castles.

How to travel to Schwangau

Trains are the easiest way in. Regional trains from Munich reach Füssen in around two hours and some need one change at Buchloe. From Füssen station a local bus takes you to Hohenschwangau in about ten minutes. By car the A7 and the B310 lead from the north to Füssen and then into the village. The route from Munich takes about two hours in normal traffic. Roads fill up on summer weekends, so allow extra time and arrive early for parking. The nearest large airport is Munich and from there you continue by train or hire car. Memmingen is a smaller airport with budget flights. Long distance buses also stop in Füssen and are usually cheaper than the train.

Access summary

  • From Munich Airport (MUC): S‑Bahn to Munich, train to Füssen, bus ~3 hours.
  • From Munich city: Train to Füssen then bus to Schwangau, about 2–2.5 hours.
  • From Füssen: Local buses or taxi to Schwangau and castles, roughly 10–20 minutes.

Where to stay in Schwangau

Hohenschwangau and Schwangau village have guesthouses, hotels and holiday apartments and are the closest bases to the castles. Staying overnight lets you see the castles early or late, when the day trip crowds are gone. Füssen is a larger town a short bus ride away with more hotels, restaurants and a historic centre. It's a good choice if you don't have a car and want more evening options. Campsites and farm stays are found around the lakes and in the nearby villages. The castle season runs from spring to autumn and summer weekends sell out early. Book many weeks ahead for those dates. Winter is quieter and cheaper though some places close for the season.

How to get around Schwangau

The village is small and spread out. Hohenschwangau, with the ticket centre and the castle shops, is the tourist hub and the castles sit above it on the hill. Most places are linked by walking paths and buses so a car is rarely needed.

Walking:
The walk from the ticket centre to Neuschwanstein is uphill and takes about half an hour.
The paths around the Alpsee are flat and easy but sturdy shoes help on the climb to the bridge.

Buses:
Local buses run between Füssen, the station and Hohenschwangau through the day.
A shuttle bus goes to the Marienbrücke when the service is running. Check that it's open before you rely on it, especially in winter.

Horse carriages:
Horse drawn carriages climb the hill when conditions allow.
They stop below the castle, so you finish the last stretch on foot.

Car:
Car parks near the ticket centre fill up fast in summer.
The main road through the village may be closed for work, so allow extra time.

Food in Schwangau

Food in Schwangau is hearty Allgäu cooking built on cheese, dairy and pork. Inns near the castles serve large portions and the restaurants fill at midday. Bakeries and cafes are easy to find and supermarkets make self-catering simple. Many small places close one day a week.

Käsespätzle:
Soft egg noodles are layered with mountain cheese and topped with fried onions.
It's the classic Allgäu main course in inns and mountain huts.

Obatzda:
This spread of ripe cheese, butter and paprika is eaten with pretzels or bread in beer gardens.
It's a favourite Bavarian snack.

Allgäu mountain cheese:
Hard cheese from alpine dairies is sold in village shops and at farms.
It makes a good picnic food for a hike.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Schwangau is very safe with little serious crime and the main risks come from the mountains. Weather changes fast and paths can be icy. Keep an eye on children near the gorge and the lake.
Health & Medical
8
Füssen has a hospital, doctors and pharmacies, so care is easy to reach. Ticks live in grass and woods around the lakes. Mountain trails can be far from help, so carry water and a charged phone.
Accessibility
4
The path up to Neuschwanstein is steep and the castle has many stairs, so the visit is hard with limited mobility. Hohenschwangau and the Alpsee paths are easier, but check ahead for the shuttle bus and carriage service.
Tap water
10
Tap water in Schwangau is safe to drink and follows German drinking water rules. Shops and cafes near the castles sell bottled water too. Refilling a bottle from the tap is fine and saves money, especially before the uphill walk.
