Why travel to Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve?

Jiuzhaigou rewards visitors with some of the most visually stunning natural scenery in China, if not the world. The reserve's crown jewels are its numerous lakes and pools whose colors range from deep blues to vibrant turquoises and emerald greens, created by calcium carbonate deposits and varying depths. These waters are so clear that you can often see the fallen trees and ancient branches preserved at the bottom, creating surreal underwater landscapes. The multi-level waterfalls, particularly the magnificent Nuorilang Waterfall, add another dimension to this water wonderland, while the surrounding forests provide a perfect backdrop that transforms dramatically with the seasons – the autumn foliage here is particularly spectacular. Beyond the natural beauty, Jiuzhaigou offers glimpses into traditional Tibetan culture through the villages within the valley, where you can experience local customs and cuisine. However, visitors should be aware of several challenges: the high altitude (2,000-4,000 meters) can cause altitude sickness for some travelers; the park can get extremely crowded with up to 40,000 daily visitors during peak seasons; and the entrance fee plus bus ticket (around 280 yuan total) is relatively expensive by Chinese standards. Additionally, while the park is known as giant panda habitat, it's extremely rare to spot these elusive creatures during your visit.

How to travel to Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve

Jiuzhaigou is located in northern Sichuan province, about 400km (8-hour drive) from Chengdu, the provincial capital. The most convenient way to reach the reserve is to fly into Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport, which has direct flights from major Chinese cities including Chengdu (45 minutes), Chongqing, Xi'an and sometimes Beijing and Shanghai. From the airport, it's about a 1.5-hour drive to the park entrance. Alternatively, long-distance buses run from Chengdu's Xinnanmen Bus Station to Jiuzhaigou, taking approximately 8-10 hours. Many visitors combine Jiuzhaigou with nearby Huanglong Scenic Area, which is about a 2-hour drive away.

Access summary

  • From Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH): Shuttle bus or taxi, about 1.5–2 hours.
  • From Chengdu: 50–60 minute flight to JZH, then 1.5–2 hour transfer.
  • From Chengdu by road: Long-distance bus or private car, usually 7–9 hours.

Where to stay in Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve

Accommodation options around Jiuzhaigou range from international chain hotels to local guesthouses, with most concentrated in Jiuzhaigou County about 15-30 minutes from the park entrance. For a more authentic experience, some visitors opt to stay in Tibetan-style guesthouses in the nearby villages. While there used to be accommodation inside the park, most has been closed to visitors. During peak seasons (summer and autumn), hotels can fill up quickly and prices surge, so advance booking is essential. The area around the park entrance tends to be more expensive, while options further away in Zhangzha Town offer better value.

How to get around Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve

The primary way to explore Jiuzhaigou is via the park's shuttle bus system, which follows a Y-shaped route connecting the three main valleys (Shuzheng, Rize and Zechawa). Buses run frequently throughout the day, allowing visitors to hop on and off at various scenic spots. The central hub is Nuorilang Center, where the valleys converge and where you can find the only restaurant inside the park. For those who prefer walking, there are well-maintained wooden boardwalks connecting many sites, though the high altitude makes hiking the entire park challenging. The park is large, so most visitors combine bus rides with short walks to maximize what they can see in a day.

Safety information overview

General safety
8
Jiuzhaigou is generally safe for tourists with low crime rates. The main concerns are altitude sickness and weather-related issues. Stay on designated paths and boardwalks, as venturing off-trail is prohibited and potentially dangerous due to the rugged terrain.
Health & Medical
5
Medical facilities are basic in Jiuzhaigou County. The altitude (2,000-4,000m) can cause sickness including headaches, shortness of breath and fatigue. Move slowly, stay hydrated and consider altitude medication. Those with heart conditions should consult doctors before visiting.
Accessibility
5
Jiuzhaigou has made efforts to be accessible with wooden boardwalks and shuttle buses, but the high altitude and size of the park present challenges for those with mobility issues. Some viewpoints require climbing stairs and the thin air makes physical exertion more difficult for everyone.
Tap water
4
Tap water is not safe for drinking in Jiuzhaigou. Bottled water is widely available for purchase at the entrance and Nuorilang Center. Despite the crystal-clear appearance of the lakes and streams, do not drink from these natural water sources.
