Best lake destinations in Asia

High-altitude lakes and scenic wilderness shorelines across Asia

Asia's lake destinations span an extraordinary range of scale, altitude and character, from the vast high-altitude lakes of the Tibetan plateau and the Himalayas and the crater lakes of Southeast Asia's volcanic zones to the enormous freshwater systems of Siberia and the reed-fringed lakes of the Indian subcontinent. Several of the continent's most celebrated lakes carry profound cultural and religious significance alongside their natural drama, with pilgrimage traditions and lakeside temple complexes adding depth well beyond scenery.

The high-altitude lakes of the Himalayan and Tibetan regions offer some of the most visually dramatic lake landscapes anywhere, where elevation, clarity and surrounding mountain terrain combine to produce environments of extraordinary intensity. Southeast Asia's crater and highland lakes sit within volcanic and jungle settings that reward exploration beyond the shoreline into the surrounding landscapes and communities.

Altitude sickness is a genuine consideration at the continent's highest lake destinations and acclimatisation time is essential before visiting sites above 3,500 metres. Seasonal timing matters considerably across the region with monsoon periods affecting accessibility and visibility at many destinations. Your money goes a long way across most of the continent making extended lake itineraries practical even when reaching remote high-altitude sites requires organised transport.
