Why travel to Leipzig?
Leipzig is worth a visit for its music history. Johann Sebastian Bach led the Thomanerchor at the Thomaskirche from 1723 until his death in 1750. Felix Mendelssohn founded Germany's first musical conservatoire here in 1843 and Richard Wagner was born in the city. The Gewandhaus Orchestra, founded in 1743, is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world. The city also played a central role in 1989. The Monday demonstrations that helped bring down the East German regime started at the Nikolaikirche. The Monument to the Battle of the Nations, completed in 1913, marks the 1813 battle against Napoleon and is one of the city's landmarks. The Old Town Hall and Auerbachs Keller are central sights. The main station is one of the largest in Europe by floor area. Beyond the centre, the city has a creative side in former industrial districts. The Neuseenland lake district south of Leipzig was created from former open-cast mines and suits walking and cycling. The zoo and the Botanical Garden are good choices for families. Two to three days cover the centre, a concert or choir visit and an afternoon at the lakes. Berlin, Dresden and Halle are easy to reach by train.

How to travel to Leipzig
Trains are the easiest way to reach Leipzig. The main station is in the centre and is served by ICE trains from Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Dresden, typically every two hours on each line. Berlin takes roughly an hour and a quarter and Dresden about an hour. Frankfurt is around three hours away and Munich about four. Leipzig/Halle Airport lies northwest of the city. The S5 and S5X S-Bahn lines run from the airport to Leipzig main station in roughly 15 to 20 minutes. The airport has flights from many European cities. Berlin Brandenburg (BER) and Frankfurt (FRA) are alternatives for long-haul trips. By car, the A9 from Berlin to Munich and the A14 from Halle to Dresden pass close to the city. Long-distance buses stop near the main station.
Access summary
- From Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ): S‑Bahn S5/S5X to Hbf, about 15–20 minutes.
- From Berlin: Direct ICE/IC trains to Leipzig Hbf, usually 1–1.5 hours.

Where to stay in Leipzig
Most visitors stay in the centre or near the main station, where hotels are close to the sights, the arcades and the S-Bahn. Rooms in historic buildings are mostly inside the ring road. Hotels around the station are practical for early trains and for the airport link. Südvorstadt is a lively district south of the centre with restaurants, bars and small guesthouses. Plagwitz in the west has converted factories, canals and a creative scene. Gohlis in the north is quieter and residential, with apartments and smaller hotels. Leipzig hosts trade fairs, the Wave-Gotik-Treffen at Pentecost and a Christmas market in Advent. Rooms fill up and prices often rise on those dates, so check the calendar and reserve early.
