Bach, music and a lively creative scene

Leipzig is the largest city in Saxony, about 95 mi southwest of Berlin, where the White Elster, Pleiße and Parthe rivers meet. Johann Sebastian Bach worked here for 27 years, the 1989 Monday demonstrations began at the Nikolaikirche and the trade fair is one of the oldest in the world. Today the center is a mix of arcades, courtyards and big museums, with creative districts like Plagwitz to the west. Visitors can hear music in the Thomaskirche, see the huge monument to the 1813 battle and head south to the lakes. Two to three days is a good length for a trip.

Why travel to Leipzig?

Leipzig is worth a visit for its music history. Johann Sebastian Bach led the Thomanerchor at the Thomaskirche from 1723 until his death in 1750. Felix Mendelssohn founded Germany's first musical conservatoire here in 1843 and Richard Wagner was born in the city. The Gewandhaus Orchestra, founded in 1743, is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world. The city also played a central role in 1989. The Monday demonstrations that helped bring down the East German regime started at the Nikolaikirche. The Monument to the Battle of the Nations, completed in 1913, marks the 1813 battle against Napoleon and is one of the city's landmarks. The Old Town Hall and Auerbachs Keller are central sights. The main station is one of the largest in Europe by floor area. Beyond the center, the city has a creative side in former industrial districts. The Neuseenland lake district south of Leipzig was created from former open-cast mines and suits walking and cycling. The zoo and the Botanical Garden are good choices for families. Two to three days cover the center, a concert or choir visit and an afternoon at the lakes. Berlin, Dresden and Halle are easy to reach by train.
