Best travel destinations for food allergies in Europe
Europe is one of the more manageable continents for allergy conscious travelers, thanks to strict food labeling rules that apply across the entire European Union.
Restaurants across EU countries are legally required to disclose the fourteen major allergens in any dish, covering nuts, dairy, shellfish, gluten and more, which makes asking questions at a restaurant far more reliable than in regions without similar laws. Italy in particular has built a strong reputation for celiac friendly travel, with widely available gluten free menus and pharmacies that stock dedicated products. Northern Europe tends to have high general awareness of dairy free and nut free eating, while some Southern and Eastern European regions still call for a bit more caution with cross contamination.
The destinations on our list for Europe reflect these differences, with plenty of options for a genuinely manageable trip.
