How to get good deals on accommodation: timing, tools and tactics

Move beyond basic searches to find the highest value for money in global travel

Two people can stay in the same hotel room on the same night and pay completely different prices. One person might have gotten lucky because they booked at a good moment on a platform that had a really low rate. The other one clicked the first result they found that looked decent and didn't bother doing any more research.

Accommodation is usually one of the biggest costs of a trip, so small changes can make a considerable difference to your total budget. Most of the savings don't come from secret tricks. They're all about habits around comparing, timing and knowing where the extra costs hide.

Let's go through them step by step, from the first search to the moment you press the "book" button.

Step 1: Compare the total price, not the nightly rate

The big number on a search page isn't always the amount you end up paying. Cleaning fees, service fees, resort fees and local taxes are sometimes added right at the end. A cleaning fee that's higher than a full night's rate isn't unheard of, especially with apartments. A cheap room in the outskirts of a city can also turn out more expensive than a slightly pricier one with breakfast included and a metro station next door.

Many booking platforms now have a setting that shows the total price including fees, which is worth switching on if you can find it. Then compare what you would actually pay for the whole stay, including breakfast, the cancellation terms and the cost of getting around. Fee and tax rules differ from country to country, so it's a good idea to check the final amount before you confirm.

Step 2: Compare platforms from the start

Don't assume that one website has all the options and promotions. The same room can have a different price on a comparison site, on a big booking platform and on the hotel's own website. The gap is sometimes 15 percent or more, so a few minutes of comparing can totally be worth your time.

Regional platforms are worth a look too. They often have rates that were negotiated directly with local properties. Some places aren't listed on international sites at all. In Asia, Agoda can show boutique stays that don't appear on Western-centric sites. In Japan, many traditional ryokans and small hotels are mostly found on local platforms like Jalan or Rakuten Travel. In South Korea, Naver Travel often lists guesthouses and pension stays that global sites don't have at all.

Step 3: Check the hotel's own website or just ask

Booking platforms charge hotels a commission, so a hotel often has a reason to give you a better deal if you book with them directly. That can mean a lower price, but also free breakfast, a late checkout or a room upgrade. Big chains usually keep their member rates for their own websites. Signing up for their loyalty programs is almost always free (even if you only stay with them once in a while).

Smaller guesthouses and family-run places are often even more flexible. A short email asking if there's a better rate for your dates or for a longer stay can be worth a try. This is especially true outside of high season.

Step 4: Find the sweet spot to book

With flights it's usually safest to book early. Hotels are less clear and the studies don't agree. One analysis by trivago found that about one month before arrival was the cheapest point on average for several European countries. Skyscanner data from 2023 found that rooms booked in the same week as the stay were cheaper on average than rooms booked a few weeks out.

Whether booking ahead or on short notice is the better choice also depends on your destination. Large cities have plenty of rooms and hotels tend to drop prices for the ones that are still empty close to the date. Small towns, islands and anything during a popular season tend to fill up early, so waiting is more of a gamble. If you're flexible, last minute deals do exist. If you have fixed dates and a place you really want, booking earlier is the safer option.

Step 5: Choose your dates with the price in mind

The same room can cost twice as much in one week as in the next. The season is the obvious reason, so dates just before or after the main rush can be a lot cheaper while the weather is often still good. Local events are also an important factor. A festival, a school holiday period or a trade fair can push hotel prices up a lot in a city that's normally affordable.

The day of the week also plays a role. Business hotels in cities are often cheaper on weekends, while resort towns and holiday areas tend to cost more then. Kayak's search data from 2024 pointed to Sunday as the cheapest check-in day, with prices up to 9 percent lower than on other days. This won't be the same everywhere, but shifting your trip by a day or two is worth trying if you have the flexibility. Longer stays can also bring weekly discounts, especially in apartments and guesthouses.

To see which weeks to go for or avoid, you can use the place info pages on travelfilters. They show the best times to travel and have a "Quick Facts" box that lists the local holidays of the destination.

Step 6: Make loyalty programs work for you

Booking platforms have loyalty programs that give you a lower price once you have an account and have made a few bookings. The Genius program on Booking.com is a well-known example. Discounts start at around 10 percent and can climb to 20 percent after a number of stays, often with perks like free breakfast or room upgrades. The levels and requirements change from time to time, so check the current conditions on the platform.

If you use one platform for most of your bookings, you'll usually climb the levels faster. These member prices can also be lower than the public sale prices that show up elsewhere, so they're worth including in your comparison from Step 2.

Hotel and airline loyalty programs are worth joining too. Membership is almost always free and often unlocks member-only rates. Travel credit cards can speed up collecting points and welcome bonuses are sometimes enough for a few free hotel nights. Cards come with annual fees and conditions that differ by country, so read the terms carefully. It also only makes sense if you pay off the balance in full every month, because the interest would eat up the rewards.

Step 7: Look beyond the standard hotel room

A good deal isn't always a hotel. Private rooms in hostels, guesthouses, Pensions and B&B are often a lot cheaper than mid-range hotels and can have more character. For longer stays, an apartment with a kitchen can bring the nightly price down and also saves money on eating out (just check the cleaning fee first). Staying a bit outside the city center can help too if there's a good public transport connection. Camping and Glamping are options in many destinations as well.

For a completely different option, there are repositioning cruises. Usually twice a year the cruise lines move their ships between regions for a new season, for example from Europe to the Caribbean. These are one-way trips with many days at sea and they're often sold at much lower prices than regular itineraries. Once meals are included, the price per night can compare well with a hotel. It only works if you have a flexible schedule and don't mind a long journey.

Good deals start before you open a booking site

A lot of the savings are decided before you start searching for a room. The destination and the month you travel have a big influence on what accommodation costs. The same budget goes a lot further in some places than in others. Our Trip Finder lets you filter by budget level and by the climate you want in the specific month you're traveling, so you can find destinations that fit both your budget and your plans.

Once you have a place and dates, it comes down to a few more steps. Compare the total price, check more than one platform, ask the hotel directly, pick your dates carefully and use the loyalty programs you have. A bit of flexibility with timing and room type can also push your budget down considerably further.
