Why travel to Dessau?
Dessau is one of the best places in the world to see Bauhaus design in the place where it was built. The school moved here in the 1920s and the Bauhaus building became its home. Today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can walk through the workshops and studios. The Bauhaus Museum holds a large collection of objects from the school and is the best place to start. The Masters' Houses stand a short walk away in the pine woods and were built for the teachers of the school. The Törten estate on the southern edge shows how the same ideas shaped affordable housing. Together the buildings tell the story of modern design and architecture and make Dessau a good short trip for fans of design. The Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm is the second reason to come. This landscape on the Elbe was laid out in the 18th century and the English style Wörlitz park is the best known part. Smaller parks such as Georgium and Luisium are closer to the city. The Elbe cycle route runs through the area so a bike is a good way to see it. Two days cover the Bauhaus sights and one park while spring and summer are the best seasons for the gardens.
Knowledge before you go
- The Bauhaus building is open every day from March to October.
- Buy tickets for the Bauhaus Museum and the building together to save time and money.
- Hire a bike to reach the Garden Realm because the paths are flat and pleasant.
- Allow a whole day for Wörlitz park since it's large and best seen without rushing around.
How to travel to Dessau
Dessau is easy to reach by train from Berlin and Leipzig. Regional express trains stop at the main station and the trip from either city is under two hours. Connections from other cities usually need a change in Berlin, Leipzig or Halle. By car the A9 runs close to the city and links it with Berlin and Leipzig in about an hour and a half. Local roads then lead to the center and the sights. The nearest large airports are Leipzig Halle and Berlin Brandenburg and from either one you reach Dessau by train with one change. Long distance buses also stop in the city and are usually cheaper than the train.
Access summary
- From Leipzig/Halle Airport: Regional train to Dessau, 45 minutes.
- From Berlin Hauptbahnhof: ICE/Regional train, 90 minutes; from Halle (Saale), 20 minutes.
- From Dresden Hauptbahnhof: S-Bahn and regional trains, about 1 hour 30 minutes.
Where to stay in Dessau
The center near the main station has most of the hotels, guesthouses and apartments and is the practical base. It suits visitors without a car and has shops and restaurants close by. The area around the Bauhaus building is quiet and green and is good if the school is your main reason to come. Some places in the villages outside the city offer a calmer stay near the gardens and the Elbe. Wörlitz has small guesthouses close to the main park. Dessau isn't a big city and the best rooms fill up on summer weekends and around events, so book ahead for the high season. Spring and autumn are quieter and easier.

How to get around Dessau
Dessau is small and spread out. The main station and the center are on one side of the city while the Bauhaus building is a short ride to the north-east and the Masters' Houses sit beside it. The Törten estate is to the south and the gardens lie around the city. Buses, bikes and your own feet cover most of the trip.

The local buses and trams link the station, the center and the main sights. Tickets follow the regional tariff and you can buy them from the driver. The Deutschlandticket is valid on local services.
Walking:
The Bauhaus building and the Masters' Houses are close to each other and can be done on foot. The center and the station are about a fifteen minute ride or a longer walk away.
Cycling:

Food in Dessau
Food in Dessau is simple regional cooking from Saxony-Anhalt with hearty dishes and fish from the Elbe. The center has cafes, bakeries and restaurants and some places inside the Bauhaus buildings. Supermarkets make self-catering easy though smaller places close one day a week.
Baumkuchen:
This tree cake is baked in thin layers that look like tree rings. It's a regional pastry and bakeries sell it by the slice or as a gift.
Elbe fish:
Zander and carp appear on menus in traditional restaurants and are usually fried or baked. Look for them near the river.
Bauhaus cafes:
Cafes in and around the museums serve coffee and cake in rooms with a design theme. They make a good break between sights.
