Smoked beer and a UNESCO old town

Bamberg is a city in Upper Franconia whose old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and came through the Second World War largely intact. It spreads across the Regnitz river and several hills, with a cathedral on the Domberg, a town hall built on an island in the river and rows of fishermen's houses along the water. Visitors can walk the old town in a day and spend the evening in a beer hall with Rauchbier, the local smoked beer. Nuremberg is a short train ride away, so Bamberg also works as a quieter base for a trip through Franconia.

Why travel to Bamberg?

The old town is the main reason to visit and has been on the UNESCO list since 1993. It has three parts. The Bergstadt (hill town) has the cathedral and the Neue Residenz, the Inselstadt (island town) has the shops and the river and the Gärtnerstadt (gardeners' town) has long-established market gardens. The Kaiserdom cathedral on the Domberg has the Bamberg Horseman, a medieval statue of a rider, along with the tomb of Emperor Henry II and his wife Kunigunde. Next door, the Neue Residenz has a rose garden with views over the roofs of the old town. Down at the river, the Altes Rathaus sits on a small island in the Regnitz and is reached by two bridges. Klein Venedig (Little Venice) is a row of old fishermen's houses along the water. Beer is the other reason to come. Bamberg has around ten breweries in the city and is known for Rauchbier, a smoked lager with a taste like smoked ham. The brewery taverns and the cellars on the hills are part of the experience. A day is enough for the main sights, while two days leave room for the cellars and the hills. Nuremberg, Würzburg and Bayreuth are all within about an hour by train, which makes Bamberg a good place to stay for a longer Franconia trip.

Knowledge before you go

  • Use a Park and Ride lot instead of searching the old town.
  • The BAMBERGcard includes free buses and regional trains for three days plus entry to many museums.
  • Sandkerwa, Bamberg's big street festival, takes place in August and fills the old town with stalls and beer.
  • Rauchbier gets its smoky taste from malt dried over beechwood fires, so the first sip takes some getting used to.

How to travel to Bamberg

Trains are the easiest way to reach Bamberg, which is on the ICE high-speed line between Munich, Nuremberg and Berlin. The trip takes under two hours from Munich and about two and a half hours from Berlin. From Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof the fastest ICE takes about 35 minutes and regional trains take a little longer. Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is the closest airport, about 70 km away, with a U-Bahn link to Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof and trains on from there. Munich Airport (MUC) is about 240 km away and Frankfurt Airport (FRA) about 230 km, both reachable by train with a change. By car, the A73 from Nuremberg and the A70 from Schweinfurt and Bayreuth cross at Bamberg. Driving from Nuremberg takes about 45 minutes.

Access summary

  • From Nuremberg Airport (NUE): Metro to Hauptbahnhof, then train, about 1.5 h.
  • From Nuremberg: Direct regional trains to Bamberg, usually 40–60 min.
  • From Frankfurt: ICE to Würzburg then regional train, roughly 2.5–3 h.

Where to stay in Bamberg

Most visitors stay in or near the old town, where small hotels, guesthouses and apartments are within walking distance of the cathedral, the river and the beer halls. Many are in historic buildings and some brewery taverns have rooms above the dining room. The Inselstadt between the river arms is the most convenient base and lively in the evening. The Bergstadt near the cathedral and the Michelsberg is quieter and steeper. The Gärtnerstadt to the east has fewer hotels but a calm, local feel. Staying near the station saves a bus ride if you arrive by train. Bamberg is small and rooms can be scarce on summer weekends, during the Sandkerwa festival in August and before Christmas, so booking ahead helps. Nuremberg is a larger option for a base with more hotels and a short train ride to Bamberg.

How to get around Bamberg

The old town is compact and flat between the river arms but the cathedral hill and the monastery on the Michelsberg are steeper. The main station is about a 20-minute walk from the centre, so most visitors combine walking with a bus or a bike.

Walking:
The Inselstadt and the Domberg are small enough to see on foot.
Cobblestones are common and some streets are narrow, so comfortable shoes help.

Buses:
City buses run by Stadtwerke Bamberg connect the station with the centre and the outer districts.
They're part of the VGN network and timetables are in the VGN app. Regional trains and buses also reach nearby villages.

Bikes:
Signposted bike routes run through the city and along the Regnitz.
Biking is a common way to cover the town and the river valley. Hire shops are in the centre.

Car:
A car isn't needed for the sights and a parking guidance system points to car parks near the centre and Park and Ride lots are recommended Monday to Saturday.

Food in Bamberg

Food in Bamberg is Franconian, with pork, sausages, dumplings and beer on most menus. Brewery taverns and traditional inns (Gasthäuser) serve the classics while the old town also has bakeries, cafés and international restaurants. Vegetarian choices are growing but traditional places lean towards meat, while cellars on the hills often serve cold plates.

Rauchbier:
A dark lager brewed with malt dried over beechwood smoke, which gives it a smoky taste that people compare to bacon or ham.
It's served in brewery taverns across the old town.

Bamberger Zwiebel:
An onion stuffed with minced meat and served with a sauce that often contains Rauchbier.
It's a classic main course in the traditional taverns of the old town.

Bamberger Hörnla:
A small, crescent-shaped potato grown in the gardeners' district of Bamberg.
It appears on menus as a side dish or as potato salad.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Bamberg is very safe for visitors. Pickpocketing is rare but can happen in crowds on festival days and in busy taverns. Bike theft is the most common crime, so lock your bike well. Streets are quiet at night.
Health & Medical
8
Medical care is excellent, with a hospital in the city and pharmacies in the old town. Ticks in forests and meadows around Franconia can carry tick-borne encephalitis, so cover up on hikes. The emergency number is 112 and it works across the EU.
Accessibility
5
The old town has cobblestones and narrow lanes. The Inselstadt is mostly flat but the Domberg and the Michelsberg are steep. City buses and the main station are mostly step-free, while some historic buildings and hill cellars are harder to reach.
Tap water
9
Tap water in Bamberg is safe to drink and monitored under strict German rules. It's moderately hard in this limestone region, which leaves limescale but doesn't affect safety. Restaurants usually serve bottled water, so ask for tap water if you prefer it.
