Half-timbered streets and a walkable town wall

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a walled town in Middle Franconia in Bavaria, built on a plateau above the Tauber valley. Its old town of half-timbered houses and cobbled lanes was damaged in World War II and rebuilt. It's one of the best-known stops on the Romantic Road route. Visitors can walk on top of the town wall, climb the town hall tower for views over the roofs and see Tilman Riemenschneider's Holy Blood altarpiece in St. James' Church. The old town is small enough to cover on foot in a day. Staying overnight also gives you the quiet streets after the day-trip groups have left.

Reiterlesmarkt Christmas market runs late November to 23 December; lodging books out, especially at weekends

Why travel to Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

Rothenburg is worth a visit for its intact medieval layout. The town wall has 42 towers and can be walked on top, with staircases at several points. Inside the wall, the market square has the town hall, which has a Gothic rear and a Renaissance front. Its tower has a steep climb up to views over the roofs. The Plönlein, at the end of Schmiedgasse, is the town's best-known photo spot. St. James' Church holds Riemenschneider's Holy Blood altarpiece and the Franciscan Church has another altarpiece by him. The Medieval Crime and Justice Museum covers old punishments and legal history. The German Christmas Museum fits a town where Christmas shops stay open all year. Evening tours with a costumed night watchman are held for most of the year. The Reiterlesmarkt Christmas market runs from late November to 23 December with decorated stalls in front of medieval houses. A day trip from Nuremberg or Würzburg is possible but one overnight stay is better. Below the walls, the Tauber valley has footpaths and vineyards. A double bridge gives a view back up to the town. It's also a convenient stop on a trip along the Romantic Road.

How to travel to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg isn't on a main rail line, so trains need at least one change, usually at Steinach. From Würzburg the trip takes about 1 hour 10 minutes and from Nuremberg between about 1 hour 10 minutes and 1 hour 50 minutes. Frankfurt is about 2.5 to 3 hours away and Munich about 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Services are generally hourly. The nearest airports with international flights are Nuremberg (NUE), Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). From Frankfurt Airport the train takes around 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. By car, Rothenburg is about 5 km off the A7 motorway. Frankfurt is about 1 hour 45 minutes away and Munich about 2 hours 20 minutes. Park in the large car parks outside the town walls. Seasonal Romantic Road coach services also stop here but their routes change from year to year, so check before you plan around them.

Where to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Visitors stay either inside the walls in half-timbered hotels and guesthouses or in the quieter streets just outside. Inside the walls you're a few minutes from the market square and the evening streets, but rooms cost more and parking is limited. Outside the walls near the station and the Tauber valley, prices are usually lower and parking is easier. Apartments and pensions are common as well. Many visitors only come for the day, so one night in Rothenburg gives you the old town without the daytime crowds. Book ahead for weekends in summer and autumn and for the Christmas market in Advent. Rooms in the old town fill up first.

How to get around Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg's old town is small and flat. Everything is within a 10 to 15 minute walk of the market square. The streets are cobbled, so comfortable shoes help. There's no tram or metro and walking is how nearly everyone gets around.

The Tauber valley is the only place where slopes matter. From the old town it's a walk downhill to the double bridge and the vineyards. The way back is uphill. A cycle route goes through the valley, which makes bikes an option for longer trips to nearby villages.

Cars are best left outside the walls. For anything beyond the town, such as the other Romantic Road stops, trains and buses are slow and a car saves time.

Food in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Food in Rothenburg is Franconian with some Hohenlohe influence, served in traditional taverns, rustic inns and a few higher-end restaurants. Local menus use lamb, goose, duck, venison, Tauber snails and Grünkern, a half-ripe spelt. Butchers in the old town sell smoked bratwurst for takeaway.

Schneeballen:
The town's best-known sweet is the Schneeball (snowball), a ball of shortcrust pastry pieces.
The classic version is dusted with powdered sugar and bakeries also sell chocolate and other versions.

Regional dishes:
Franconian classics include roast pork shoulder with dumplings and bratwurst with sauerkraut.
Inns also serve goose and duck, especially in autumn.

Wine:
The southern edge of the Franconian wine region reaches the foot of the town wall.
Tauber wines include Silvaner and Riesling and the local red variety Tauberschwarz.

Beer:
A brewery in Reichelshofen, about 6 km north, brews Franconian red beer and runs tours.
At least one hotel in town brews beer that's only sold on site.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Rothenburg is very safe. Petty theft in crowds at the market square and the Christmas market is the main crime risk. Uneven cobbles and steep wall staircases cause more trouble than crime. Violent crime is rare.
Health & Medical
7
Medical care is at German standard, with pharmacies and doctors in town and larger hospitals in Ansbach and Würzburg. Ticks live in meadows and woods in the Tauber valley from spring to autumn. Summers can be warm, so carry water on the wall walk.
Accessibility
4
The old town is flat, but the cobbles are uneven and hard on wheelchairs and walkers. The town wall and towers have steep, narrow staircases. Many old buildings have steps or no lifts. The way down to the Tauber valley is steep.
Tap water
9
Tap water in Rothenburg is safe to drink and follows German drinking water rules. Restaurants usually serve bottled mineral water. Ask for Leitungswasser if you'd like tap water, though some places charge for it. Supermarkets sell bottled water cheaply.
