Roman Streets, Sun-Kissed Shores, UNESCO

Porec in Croatia’s Istria region features a compact historic core surrounded by Venetian walls and modern cafes along cobblestone streets. The city center centers on the Piazza Primora, where locals gather near the 14th-century church of St. Euphemia. Local markets sell fresh seafood, truffles and olive oil from nearby farms. Public transport connects to beaches and vineyards within an hour’s drive. The coastal promenade hosts summer concerts while historic sites like the Basilica of the Holy Cross showcase centuries-old architecture without overwhelming modern development.

Why travel to Poreč?

If you love a blend of history, culture and beach time, Poreč is a fantastic pick. The old town is a treasure trove of Roman and medieval sights, with the Euphrasian Basilica as its UNESCO crown jewel. The coastline stretches for over 10 km, offering everything from wild, rocky coves to lively resort beaches. There’s a real sense of balance here: plenty for families, couples and partygoers alike, with a great choice of restaurants, bars, water sports and cycling trails. Poreč is also a perfect base for exploring the rest of Istria. The downside? Summer brings crowds, especially in July and August and prices rise with the heat. The town is well-organized, but parking can be tricky near the center in peak season. Some beaches are pebbly or concrete, so water shoes are a good idea. Still, Poreč’s friendly vibe, clean streets and laid-back Adriatic spirit make it a place you’ll want to return to.

  • Climb the basilica bell tower for panoramas, then sunset-stroll the Lungomare promenade loop.

How to travel to Poreč

Poreč is well-connected by bus to Pula, Rovinj and other Istrian towns. The nearest airports are Pula (about 60 km) and Trieste (Italy, about 70 km). Ferries run from Venice to Poreč in summer. Car rental is handy for exploring the region, but not needed for the old town itself.

Access summary

  • From Zagreb: Roughly 3–4 hours by car or direct intercity bus.
  • From Venice: Seasonal fast ferries about 2–3 hours across Adriatic.

How to get around Poreč

The old town and main sights are easily explored on foot. Bikes are a great way to get around the coast and reach beaches or resorts.
