Best birdwatching destinations in North America

National park flyways and coastal wetland trails in North America

North America has one of the most developed birdwatching cultures in the world, and the continent's birdlife justifies it. With over 900 species recorded in the United States and Canada alone, and significantly more when Mexico is included, the variety on offer spans an extraordinary range of habitats. Arctic tundra, Pacific rainforest, Great Plains grassland, Gulf Coast wetlands, Sonoran Desert, these are ecosystems with distinct and often spectacular bird communities.

The continent has a well-established infrastructure for birders at every level. National parks and wildlife refuges provide protected habitat across the full range of ecosystems, and a deep community of local birders means that finding recent sightings, local knowledge, and guided experiences is rarely difficult. The tradition of the Christmas Bird Count and the culture around listing and citizen science has produced some of the most detailed bird distribution data anywhere in the world.

Migration is one of North America's great birdwatching spectacles. The Mississippi Flyway, the Atlantic Coast corridor, and the Pacific Flyway funnel billions of birds through predictable routes twice a year, concentrating species at well-known hotspots in numbers that can be genuinely staggering. Whether you're new to birding or working through a serious life list, North America offers more than most people manage to see in a lifetime.
