Wild Alaska’s peaks and wildlife

Denali National Park spans over six million acres in Alaska, home to North America’s tallest peak. The landscape shifts from dense forests to open tundra and glaciers that stretch for miles. Wildlife thrives here including grizzly bears, moose, caribou and wolves. Visitors can hike rugged trails or ride a bus through the park to see mountain vistas up close. Weather changes quickly, so preparation matters. The area holds deep cultural ties to Indigenous peoples who have lived nearby for generations.

Why travel to Denali National Park?

If you crave big nature, Denali is unforgettable. The park’s single road winds through vast wilderness, offering jaw-dropping views of Denali (the mountain) and a real chance to spot the ‘Big Five’-grizzly bears, moose, caribou, wolves and Dall sheep. Whether you hike, take a bus tour or try flightseeing, the scale and solitude are like nowhere else. Just remember: wildlife sightings aren’t guaranteed and the weather can change in a blink, with snow possible even in summer. Private vehicles are only allowed on the first 15 miles of the park road; after that, you’ll need to hop on a park shuttle or tour bus.

  • Book shuttle or narrated bus tickets early; services can sell out quickly in peak season.
  • Pack layers, rain gear, snacks and water; there are few services once inside the park.
  • Go for early-morning wildlife viewing and clearer mountain chances; clouds often hide Denali later.

Safety information overview

General safety
8
Denali is very safe from crime, but the wilderness poses real risks: weather, wildlife and remote terrain. Always follow ranger advice, keep food secured and stay alert for bears. Cell service is limited or nonexistent inside the park.
Health & Medical
5
Medical care is limited to first aid at visitor centers. For emergencies, evacuation to Fairbanks may be required. Carry any needed medications and be prepared for altitude, cold and rapid weather changes.
Accessibility
3
Visitor centers, shuttle buses and some trails are accessible, but much of the park is rugged and remote. Wheelchair-accessible buses are available on main tours. Check ahead for accessible lodging and activities.
Tap water
8
Tap water at visitor centers and campgrounds is safe to drink. In the backcountry, always treat water from streams or lakes. Carry a refillable bottle, as water sources can be far apart.
