Why travel to Katmai National Park?
Traveling to Katmai offers a rare opportunity to witness brown bears in their natural habitat, often in remarkable concentrations. At Brooks Falls during salmon runs, visitors can observe 10+ bears simultaneously from viewing platforms as these magnificent creatures compete for prime fishing spots. The sight of a half-ton bear skillfully catching bright red salmon mid-air is an unforgettable wildlife encounter that photographers and nature enthusiasts dream about. Beyond the bears, Katmai's dramatic volcanic landscape tells the story of one of Earth's most powerful geological events. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, created by the 1912 Novarupta eruption, offers hikers an otherworldly terrain to explore. With pristine lakes, rivers teeming with sockeye salmon and virtually no crowds compared to more accessible national parks, Katmai provides a genuine wilderness experience that feels increasingly rare in today's world. As one visitor put it, this park 'trumps them all like a half-ton brown bear tearing apart a bright red salmon.'

Where to stay in Katmai National Park
Accommodation options in Katmai are extremely limited and book up far in advance. Brooks Lodge offers the only full-service accommodations within the park, while Brooks Camp provides a more basic campground experience surrounded by an electric fence to keep bears out. Both require reservations months (or even a year) in advance. Alternatively, many visitors opt for day trips from nearby towns or stay at remote fishing lodges accessible only by floatplane.
