Why travel to Cayo District?
Traveling to Cayo District offers a rare opportunity to experience both pristine nature and ancient history in one destination. The district houses some of the most impressive Maya archaeological sites in Central America, including Caracol, Xunantunich and Cahal Pech, where you can climb ancient temples and imagine life as it was thousands of years ago. The extensive network of caves, particularly Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) with its ancient artifacts and skeletal remains, provides a fascinating glimpse into Maya spiritual beliefs and practices. What makes Cayo truly special is how these cultural treasures are seamlessly integrated with natural wonders. The district is home to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve with its impressive waterfalls (including the tallest in Central America), the twin rivers of Macal and Mopan perfect for canoeing adventures and diverse ecosystems that support an incredible array of wildlife. Unlike more commercialized destinations, Cayo maintains an authentic, laid-back atmosphere where you can interact with locals from various cultural backgrounds, sample farm-to-table cuisine and experience eco-tourism that genuinely connects you with the environment.
