Why travel to Voyageurs National Park?

Voyageurs offers a rare opportunity to experience a truly water-based national park, where boats replace cars as the primary mode of transportation. This creates a distinctive adventure that combines the thrill of navigating pristine lakes with the serenity of disconnecting from the usual tourist crowds. The park's complex waterway system includes four major lakes-Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan and Sand Point – each with its own character and beauty, dotted with over 500 islands and 655 miles of undeveloped shoreline to explore. What makes Voyageurs special is the variety of experiences available throughout the year. Summer brings opportunities for fishing, paddling, swimming and camping on remote islands. Fall transforms the forests into a spectacular display of colors. Winter creates an entirely different landscape where frozen lakes become highways for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. The park also offers exceptional stargazing opportunities due to minimal light pollution and the chance to witness the northern lights. Just be prepared for the bugs – the summer months bring persistent flies and mosquitoes that can be challenging even with repellent.

Safety information overview

General safety
5
Voyageurs is generally safe regarding crime, but natural hazards exist. Water safety is paramount - wear life jackets when boating and be aware of changing weather conditions. Navigation can be challenging with numerous islands and channels, so proper maps and GPS are essential.
Health & Medical
6
Medical facilities are limited within the park. The nearest hospitals are in International Falls and surrounding communities. Cell service is spotty, complicating emergency communication. Bring necessary medications and a first aid kit. Insect-borne diseases are possible during summer months.
Accessibility
6
Accessibility is challenging due to the water-based nature of the park. Visitor centers are accessible, but most park experiences require boat travel and potentially difficult terrain. Some accessible boat tours are available. Those with mobility issues should contact the park in advance for accommodation options.
Tap water
9
Drinking water is available at visitor centers, but not throughout the park. When camping or boating, bring your own water or purification methods. Lake water requires treatment before consumption. Stay well-hydrated, especially during summer activities on the water.
