Car-Free Alpine Bliss and Epic Views

Bern stands as Switzerland’s capital with a compact city center focused on its medieval old town. The area around Bern features wide streets lined with sandstone buildings and historic landmarks like the Zytglogge clock tower. Travelers can walk to nearby hills for panoramic views of rolling mountains and valleys below. Lauterbrunnen sits in a deep valley surrounded by towering peaks, while Wengen rests above on the edge of the Eiger mountain range. Both villages provide easy access to hiking trails with clear paths through forests and past waterfalls.

Why travel to Wengen?

Wengen is a dream for anyone who loves the outdoors and classic Alpine charm. The village is only accessible by cogwheel railway, which means no cars and a peaceful, timeless atmosphere. In winter, it’s a ski and snow sports hub, with direct access to the Jungfrau ski region and legendary runs like the Lauberhorn. Summer brings endless hiking and biking trails, from gentle valley strolls to panoramic ridge walks with views that will stop you in your tracks. The village is also a gateway to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe – and offers easy connections to Lauterbrunnen, Mürren and Grindelwald. But Wengen isn’t for everyone: prices are typically Swiss (read: not cheap) and the village can get busy during peak ski and hiking seasons. Because it’s car-free, you’ll need to carry your luggage from the train station to your accommodation (though many hotels offer porter service). Weather can change quickly and even in summer, evenings can be chilly. Still, if you want a blend of stunning scenery, fresh mountain air and a slow, friendly pace, Wengen is pure Alpine magic.

How to get around Wengen

Wengen is entirely car-free, so you’ll get around on foot or by bike within the village. Luggage trolleys are available at the station and many hotels offer porter service. For exploring the wider Jungfrau region, trains and cable cars are efficient and scenic.
