Why travel to Liechtenstein?
What makes Liechtenstein truly special is its fairy-tale quality combined with accessibility. The country's dramatic Alpine scenery provides a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities year-round, while its well-preserved medieval castles and villages offer glimpses into centuries of fascinating history. Despite its small size, Liechtenstein maintains a distinct cultural identity with unique traditions, museums and a surprising art scene that punches well above its weight. However, travelers should be aware that Liechtenstein can be expensive, similar to neighboring Switzerland and its small size means you can explore most attractions in just a day or two. The weather can also be unpredictable, with the possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rain in summer, particularly in the afternoons and significant snowfall in winter. Currently in mid-March, we're experiencing mild spring conditions with temperatures around 5-10°C, though weather can change quickly in the mountains.

How to travel to Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein doesn't have its own airport or train station, so visitors typically arrive through neighboring countries. The closest international airports are in Zurich, Switzerland (about 1.5 hours by car or train/bus) and Innsbruck, Austria (about 2 hours away). From Zurich Airport, take a train to Sargans or Buchs in Switzerland, then connect to a bus into Liechtenstein. Alternatively, regular buses run from Feldkirch, Austria and Sargans, Switzerland directly into Vaduz and other Liechtenstein towns. The country is also easily accessible by car via well-maintained roads from both Switzerland and Austria, though be aware that you'll need a vignette (toll sticker) if coming via Austrian highways.
Access summary
- From nearby hubs: fly to Zurich or Altenrhein, then train+bus to Vaduz.
- From Switzerland/Austria/Germany: drive or take regional trains to Buchs/Feldkirch, bus onward.
- From long-haul origins: connect via major European hubs to Zurich, continue by rail.
Where to stay in Liechtenstein
Accommodation in Liechtenstein is limited but high-quality, ranging from boutique hotels to family-run guesthouses and mountain lodges. Most options are concentrated in Vaduz, Schaan and the ski resort area of Malbun. While there are no five-star luxury hotels, four-star properties offer excellent service and amenities. Prices tend to be similar to Switzerland (on the expensive side), especially during peak summer and winter seasons. Booking ahead is recommended, particularly for visits during National Day celebrations in August or ski season from December to March.
