Cliffside charm and Amalfi gateway

Sorrento stands on the Amalfi Coast where lemon groves climb steep hills toward azure skies. The city’s compact streets lead to cafes with sea views and shops selling handmade ceramics. Ferries depart daily for Capri, Ischia and Positano, making it easy to explore nearby islands without long commutes. Local markets sell ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and fragrant herbs used in everyday Neapolitan cooking. Walking along the waterfront feels relaxed yet lively; you can hear street musicians playing traditional songs while locals chat over espresso at outdoor tables.

Why travel to Sorrento?

Sorrento is a dream for anyone who loves a blend of Italian culture, spectacular scenery and easy access to the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Pompeii. Its old town is a maze of cobbled streets filled with artisan shops, lively cafés and historic churches. You can swim at the dramatic Bagni Regina Giovanna, stroll the lush Villa Comunale gardens or dine on fresh seafood in the fishing village of Marina Grande. Downsides? Sorrento can get crowded in summer and the main station and buses are often packed – watch out for pickpockets. The town is perched on cliffs, so getting to the beaches means steep walks or crowded shuttle buses, which can be tough for those with mobility issues. Some beaches are small and pebbly and driving the coastal roads is not for the faint of heart. Still, Sorrento’s charm, safety and unbeatable location make it a favorite Italian base.

  • Book boats, Pompeii day trips and Amalfi transfers early in summer peak weeks.
  • Walk to Bagni della Regina Giovanna early; the Roman-ruins lagoon gets crowded and slippery later.

Book early for summer, as rooms fill fast. Some hotels are perched on cliffs with lots of steps-check accessibility if needed.

How to get around Sorrento

Sorrento’s old town is compact and best explored on foot, but getting to beaches or the port means steep walks or taking local shuttle buses and elevators. Taxis are available and ferries run to Capri and Naples from Marina Piccola. Driving is possible, but streets are narrow and parking is limited.
