Castle dell'Ovo is a unique fortress with a rich history dating back to Roman times, situated on the former island of Megaride which is now a peninsula. According to legend, the Roman poet Virgil hid a magical egg in the castle's foundations which is said to protect the city – as long as the egg remains intact, neither castle nor Naples will fall.
The castle's architecture reflects its Norman origins and centuries of modifications, featuring battlements, medieval towers such as the Normandia Tower and the Church of San Salvatore adorned with late Byzantine frescoes. Visitors can explore feature-rich interiors, vaulted Gothic rooms, prisons and ceremonial halls heavily steeped in history.
The outdoor terraces of the castle provide spectacular views over the Gulf of Naples, including panoramic sights of the active volcano Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri. The adjacent Borgo Marinari marina is full of lively restaurants and bars, perfect for a meal with a view after a day of exploration.
Visitors should note that while entrance to the castle exterior and terraces is free, certain interior exhibitions may require tickets. The historical site has some uneven surfaces and staircases, so comfortable footwear is advised. The site can get busy during weekends and holidays, so early visits are recommended for a quieter experience.
