Prussian palaces and lakes near Berlin

Potsdam is the capital of Brandenburg and borders Berlin to the southwest, with lakes and the Havel river around it. It was a royal residence for centuries. Frederick the Great's Sanssouci Palace and its park are the centrepiece of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes the New Palace, Babelsberg Park and the Russian colony of Alexandrowka. Visitors can also see the brick houses of the Dutch Quarter, Cecilienhof Palace and the Brandenburg Gate in the town centre. Many people come as a day trip from Berlin by train, but the palaces and parks easily fill a full day.

Why travel to Potsdam?

Potsdam is worth a visit for Sanssouci Palace and the park around it. Frederick II had the palace built in the 18th century as a summer retreat and its interiors are preserved from that time. Voltaire was among the guests. The park also has the late Baroque New Palace, Charlottenhof Palace and the Chinese House. The whole area is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Beyond Sanssouci, the Neuer Garten has Cecilienhof Palace, where the Potsdam Conference took place after World War II. Park Babelsberg has Babelsberg Palace and views over the Havel. The Russian colony of Alexandrowka has log houses that were built for Russian singers in the 19th century. The town centre has the Dutch Quarter with its red-brick houses, the Brandenburg Gate and the Museum Barberini art museum. Babelsberg is the home of Filmpark Babelsberg and one of the oldest film studios in the world. The city is more spread out than many visitors expect. A day trip from Berlin covers Sanssouci and a few highlights. A second day lets you see the old town and Babelsberg. The Havel lakes add boat trips and cycling.

Knowledge before you go

  • Sanssouci Palace is closed on Mondays and uses timed tickets.
  • The free SANSSOUCI app gives multimedia tours, but bring your own headphones since none are lent out.
  • From Berlin you need an ABC ticket, as the standard AB ticket doesn't cover the trip to Potsdam.
  • About once an hour the RE1 to Brandenburg stops at Potsdam Park Sanssouci, close to the palace and park.

How to travel to Potsdam

Trains from Berlin are the easiest way to reach Potsdam. The RE1 regional express takes about 25 to 30 minutes from central Berlin stations and continues towards Brandenburg an der Havel and Magdeburg. The S7 S-Bahn runs about every 10 minutes during the day and takes roughly 45 minutes from the centre. Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is the nearest major airport. With a change in Berlin, allow about an hour and a half by train. Long-distance trains arrive in Berlin and connect from there to Potsdam. By car, Potsdam is about 40 minutes to an hour from central Berlin depending on traffic. Parking near the palaces is paid and limited, so many visitors take the train and use local trams and buses once they arrive.

Access summary

  • From Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER): direct RB22 train about 50–60 minutes.
  • From Berlin Hbf: frequent RE1 or S-Bahn trains about 25–40 minutes.
  • Popular day-trip from Berlin; integrated tickets cover Berlin–Potsdam regional trains.

Where to stay in Potsdam

Most visitors stay in the old town around the Brandenburg Gate and the Dutch Quarter. Small hotels and guesthouses there are close to shops and restaurants and about 20 to 30 minutes on foot from Sanssouci. Babelsberg is quieter and residential, with apartments and boutique hotels near the film studios and the park. Rooms in Potsdam are limited in number and Berlin has far more, so many visitors stay in Berlin and come for the day by train. Book ahead for summer weekends, the Christmas market season and big events at the palaces. Weekday rooms also fill with business travellers because the city has several universities and research institutes.

How to get around Potsdam

Potsdam's old town is compact and walkable, but the palaces are spread across large parks and several districts. Sanssouci Park alone has a main avenue about 2.5 km long, so allow plenty of time on foot.

Walking:
From the main station the old town is about a 15 minute walk.
The walk from the old town to Sanssouci Palace takes about 20 to 30 minutes and goes through shopping streets and the edge of the park.

Trams and buses:
Trams and buses run to the main sights.
A stop called Schloss Sanssouci is next to the palace. A single ABC fare from Berlin also covers local transport in Potsdam. In summer a free shuttle runs between the Grünes Gitter entrance and the New Palace if weather allows.

Bikes:
The city is flat enough for cycling.
Guided bike tours are on offer and bikes work well for the lakeside parks and the Havel shore paths.

Car:
A car isn't needed in Potsdam.
Paid parking for Sanssouci is at the Historic Windmill visitor centre, near the palace and the park entrance.

Food in Potsdam

Food in Potsdam is a mix of Brandenburg and Berlin cooking with plenty of international restaurants, cafés in the Dutch Quarter and kiosks selling currywurst. Sanssouci Park has only a few cafés near the main buildings, so bring water and snacks for a long day.

Havel fish:
Fish from the Havel lakes, such as pike-perch and eel, is on many menus and is usually served fried or smoked.

Asparagus:
Beelitz asparagus from fields nearby is the big seasonal product and white asparagus is served from April until late June.

Brandenburg dishes:
Boiled potatoes with quark and linseed oil are a regional classic.
Game from the local forests appears on menus in autumn.

Safety information overview

General safety
8
Potsdam is very safe. Petty theft is the main risk, in crowds around the main sights and on trains from Berlin. The parks can be dark and empty after dusk. In storms stay out of the parks, since old trees can drop branches.
Health & Medical
9
Medical care is at German standard, with hospitals in Potsdam and nearby Berlin and pharmacies throughout the city. Ticks live in parks, woods and meadows around the lakes from spring to autumn. Summers can be hot.
Accessibility
6
The old town is flat but has cobbled streets. Sanssouci Palace is only conditionally accessible and pushchairs aren't allowed in the exhibition rooms. The parks have long distances and gravel paths. Trams and buses are mostly low-floor.
Tap water
9
Tap water in Potsdam is safe to drink and follows German drinking water rules. Restaurants usually serve bottled mineral water. Ask for Leitungswasser if you'd like tap water, though some places charge for it. Supermarkets sell bottled water cheaply.
