Why travel to Bonn?
Bonn suits visitors who like music and recent history. Beethoven was born here and the Beethoven-Haus shows more than 200 original items, while the Beethoven Monument is on Münsterplatz. Entry to the Haus der Geschichte is free. It covers German history after World War II, including the decades when Bonn was the seat of government. Today Bonn is also a UN city, with the UN Climate Change secretariat among the organisations based here. The Museumsmeile has more to offer. The Kunstmuseum focuses on August Macke and Expressionism while the Bundeskunsthalle holds temporary exhibitions on art and other topics. Poppelsdorf Palace is next to the university's botanical garden. The Rheinaue is a large park by the river with a lake and a monthly flea market in the warmer months. Cherry blossoms peak in March and April, especially on Breite Straße and Heerstraße. The Siebengebirge are close by across the Rhine. A cog railway goes up the Drachenfels from Königswinter and the summit has views over the Rhine valley. Two days are enough for the old town, the museums and the river. A third day works for the Siebengebirge or for Cologne.

Where to stay in Bonn
Most visitors stay in the old town or near the main station, where hotels of all sizes are close to the Beethoven-Haus, the shopping streets and the Stadtbahn. The Südstadt, just south of the centre, has historic apartment buildings and many cafés and restaurants. Poppelsdorf is a student quarter near the palace and the botanical garden. Bad Godesberg in the south is quieter and greener, with the Rhine promenade and the Godesburg hill. It suits you if you prefer a calmer base and don't mind a Stadtbahn ride into the centre. Königswinter across the river is a good choice for the Siebengebirge. Rooms fill up during the cherry blossom, the Beethovenfest and large conferences at the World Conference Center. Check dates before booking.

How to get around Bonn
Bonn is compact and mostly flat. The old town, the main station and the Rhine promenade are close together, while the Museumsmeile, Bad Godesberg and the Rheinaue are a Stadtbahn or bus ride away.
Walking:
The old town and the pedestrian zone around Münsterplatz are easy on foot. From the main station to the Beethoven-Haus is a walk of about 15 minutes through the centre.
Stadtbahn and buses:
The Stadtwerke Bonn network runs Stadtbahn lines and buses. Lines 16 and 18 also go to Cologne and line 66 goes to Königswinter at the foot of the Drachenfels. Tickets are sold by price level, with a single central price level for most trips in the centre.
Bikes:
The Rhine cycle path goes through Bonn and the flat riverside is easy to ride. Bikes are hired in the centre and at the main station.
Car:
A car isn't needed for the sights. The centre has paid car parks and the old town has a pedestrian zone.
Food in Bonn
Food in Bonn is Rhenish cooking served in brewpubs and traditional restaurants (Gaststätten). Because Bonn is a university and UN city, vegetarian and international food is easy to find. Bakeries and supermarkets in the centre make picnics on the Rhine simple.
Himmel un Äd:
Fried blood sausage served with mashed potatoes and apple sauce, often with fried onions. The name means heaven and earth in the local dialect.
Halve Hahn:
Despite the name, it's a rye roll with a thick slice of aged Gouda, mustard and onions. It's a classic pub snack in the Rhineland.
Sauerbraten:
Rhenish Sauerbraten is beef marinated for days in vinegar and spices, usually served with red cabbage and dumplings. The sauce often has raisins in it.
Beer:
Kölsch from nearby Cologne is the standard beer and comes in small, slim glasses. Bönnsch is Bonn's own top-fermented beer and is mostly found in brewpubs.
