Why travel to Carcassonne?

Carcassonne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. The sheer scale of the ramparts, the fairy-tale turrets and the dramatic views over the Aude valley and the Pyrenees are breathtaking. You can explore the Château Comtal, walk the ramparts and marvel at the stained glass in the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire. The city comes alive with festivals, concerts and a spectacular Bastille Day fireworks display that lights up the fortress walls. Beyond the Cité, the quieter Ville Basse offers art museums, markets and a more local vibe. But a few cautions: Carcassonne is hugely popular, especially in summer, so the old city can get crowded and touristy – early mornings or late evenings are more peaceful. Some attractions charge extra for entry or guided tours and the cobblestone streets can be tough on your feet. The summer heat can be intense, while winter nights are chilly. Still, the magic of Carcassonne is real and it’s a must-see for anyone traveling in southern France.
