Best destinations to visit in July in Asia

July keeps much of Asia deep in its wet season, though a handful of regions actually reach their best conditions of the year this month.

India's monsoon peaks in July, while a rain shadow region like Ladakh, cut off by mountains from the worst of the rain, opens up for the year once its high mountain roads clear of snow. Mainland Southeast Asia stays wet too, though islands running on a separate dry season schedule, including much of Indonesia, remain clear and sunny straight through the month. East Asia's rainy season typically eases by mid July, giving way to hot, humid summer weather across the region. Mountain areas stay noticeably more comfortable than the lowlands during this stretch, and higher elevations often offer real relief from the summer heat.

The destinations on our list for Asia lean into that drier side of the split, from mountain regions to islands untouched by the monsoon.

City in Vietnam
Da Nang
Beaches, Mountains and City Vibes
Warm sea air and the smell of grilled squid drift along My Khe Beach at dusk. Days in this city are hot and mostly dry and the sea is calm for swimming. The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival usually lights the Han River on summer weekend nights. Marble Mountains have caves and shrines.
Region in Indonesia
Bali
Tropical beaches, vibrant culture and adventure
Uluwatu Temple stands on a sea cliff above surf that peaks in the dry season. July has little rain and bright days across this island. Trails through rice fields near Ubud are dry and easy to walk. The Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar usually runs until mid July.
Town in Vietnam
Hoi An
Charming Lanterns and Timeless Streets
On the 14th night of each lunar month the old town turns off its electric lights. Locals float paper lanterns on the Thu Bon River to make wishes. The old trading port is hot and mostly dry in July. The sea off An Bang Beach is calm and warm.
State/Prefecture in Japan
Hokkaido
Volcanoes, powder snow and fresh seafood
Sapporo is several degrees cooler than Tokyo in July and misses most of Japan's early summer rain. Lavender fields at Furano turn purple in early to mid July. Daisetsuzan National Park, Japan's largest, has alpine wildflowers and trails mostly clear of snow by July. Cool nights make hiking easy.
Island
Borneo
Wild rainforests meet unique wildlife
Researcher Biruté Galdikas set up Camp Leakey in the Tanjung Puting jungle in 1971. Visitors still reach it by klotok, a slow wooden riverboat. Dry season runs through July in this part of Borneo so trails are firmer. Orangutans come to feeding platforms for bananas at set times.
Island in Indonesia
Flores (Indonesia)
Sunset beaches and volcanic landscapes
This long island lies east of Sumbawa and has volcanoes down its middle. Kelimutu has three crater lakes that change colour from green to blue or red. Mornings at the lakes are mostly clear in July. Labuan Bajo on the west coast is the port for Komodo boat trips.
Island in Indonesia
Lombok
Untamed Beaches and Majestic Mountains
Cold wind and loose volcanic gravel greet hikers on the Rinjani summit trail. The trek to the 3,726 metre summit is open in the dry season. A crater lake called Segara Anak glows blue below the rim. Afterwards the Gili Islands off the northwest coast are a short boat ride away.
Country
Mongolia
Land of endless steppes
This landlocked country between Russia and China has more horses than people. Naadam runs 11 to 13 July with wrestling, horse racing and archery in Ulaanbaatar. Outside the capital, green grass rolls to the horizon and herders live in round felt tents called gers. Summer days are warm and long.
Region in India
Ladakh
Himalayan Cold Desert of Contrasts
Leh Palace was built in the 1600s for Ladakh's kings and still towers over town. Mountain passes are open in July so jeeps reach Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley. Ladakh lies behind the Himalaya so the monsoon barely reaches it. Leh is about 11,500 feet up so rest two days before any hikes.
National Park in Indonesia
Komodo National Park
Dragons, Pristine Reefs and Wild Beauty
Padar Island has a short trail to a lookout over three bays with different coloured sand. Dry season brings clear skies and sharp underwater views in July. Komodo dragons often rest near the ranger station on Rinca. Snorkel the coral reef just off the sand at Pink Beach.
Desert in Mongolia
Gobi Desert
Endless dunes under starlit desert skies
July days in the Gobi reach the 90s Fahrenheit but nights cool fast. Summer brings the little rain this desert gets and herders move camels to greener grass. Khongor Sand Dunes rise up to 300 metres and hum when the wind moves the sand. Flaming Cliffs glow red at sunset.
