Best destinations to visit in July in Africa

July counts among the best months of the year for East African safaris, even as other parts of the continent settle into a quieter, wetter season.

The wildebeest migration often reaches the Mara River around this time, drawing wildlife watchers hoping to see the crossings between Kenya and Tanzania. Southern safari regions in Botswana, Zambia and South Africa's Kruger area stay deep in their dry season too, with strong wildlife viewing and cold, clear nights typical of the southern winter. Cape Town and the wider Cape region remain in their rainy winter through July, making it one of the quieter, less predictable months to visit. North Africa turns hot inland, though its Mediterranean coastline stays comfortable for beach travel. Layers become essential for early morning game drives, even where the days themselves stay warm and sunny.

The destinations on our list for Africa lean into that dry season strength found across the continent's safari regions.

National Park in South Africa
Kruger National Park
Where Africa's Big Five Roam Free
Cold dawns and dry bush define July in Kruger. Temperatures run roughly 48 to 79°F. Thin vegetation and low grass make animals easier to spot. Wildlife gathers at dams, rivers and waterholes. Dress warmly for early drives. Mosquitoes are dormant but ask a doctor about malaria advice.
Country
Tanzania
Wild safaris meet tropical beaches
Zanzibar receives its least rain in July and the drier period runs from June to October. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the mainland more than 1.5 million wildebeest follow the rains through the Serengeti. Herds cross rivers on the way towards Kenya. Kilimanjaro rises 19,341 feet.
Country
Mauritius
Tropical Bliss in the Indian Ocean
July falls in the cooler, drier winter that runs from June to September and averages 68.7°F. Tropical cyclones usually strike between January and March, so July avoids them. A coral reef, the world's third largest, encircles the island. More than 90 miles of white sandy beaches ring it.
Country
Namibia
Desert wilderness meets wildlife wonders
Winter runs from June to August and is the dry season. The country gets more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Central areas can swing up to 54°F between day and night, so pack layers. Etosha Pan, Sossusvlei and Fish River Canyon rank among the most visited sites.
Country
Rwanda
Land of a thousand hills
Kigali lies at 5,141 feet, nearly as high as Denver. Daily temperatures range from about 59 to 82°F. The main dry season runs from June to September and is often completely dry. Volcanoes National Park holds about a third of the world's mountain gorillas. Permits cost US$1,500.
Country
Uganda
Pearl of Africa's diverse landscapes
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park won UNESCO World Heritage status in 1994. It holds almost half of the world's mountain gorillas, with 459 counted in 2018. June to August is dry in most of the country, which eases road and trail conditions. Heavy rain in other seasons makes travel harder.
Country
Botswana
Safari paradise with diverse landscapes
Chobe National Park has the world's largest concentration of African elephants. Floodwaters in the Okavango Delta peak from June to August. July brings water to a country where the Kalahari covers up to 70 percent of the land. Only about 11 people live per square mile.
Nature Reserve in Kenya
Maasai Mara
Endless savannahs echo with wildlife rhythms
Mara means spotted in the Maa language, a nod to short bushy trees dotting the plains. The Maasai, the area's ancestral inhabitants, migrated there from the Nile Basin. Conservancies around the reserve keep wildlife corridors open and share tourism revenue with Maasai landowners. July mornings run 52 to 59°F.
Town in South Africa
Hermanus
Whale Watching and Coastal Wonders
The village honours Hermanus Pieters, who died before it existed. Its name was shortened in 1902. Southern right whales arrive from June and usually leave in early December. Since August 1992 the town has employed the world's only whale crier, who announces sightings with a kelp horn.
Nature Reserve in Kenya
Maasai Mara National Reserve
Witness the Great Migration
Where the Serengeti meets Kenya, herds gather at the Sand River before crossing into the reserve. In July 2025 the first major crossing came on 8 July and Mara River crossings followed a few days later. The Mara Triangle covers the western part. Days reach 77 to 82°F.
