Why travel to Rwanda?

What makes Rwanda truly special is its extraordinary combination of natural beauty, wildlife encounters and cultural experiences. The country offers one of the world's most memorable wildlife experiences – tracking mountain gorillas in their natural habitat within Volcanoes National Park. Beyond gorillas, Rwanda's diverse ecosystems support chimpanzees, golden monkeys and over 700 bird species across its various national parks and reserves. Beyond wildlife, Rwanda impresses with its commitment to conservation, cleanliness and sustainable tourism. The capital city Kigali is remarkably clean and organized, while the countryside offers stunning vistas of terraced hillsides, tea plantations and volcanic landscapes. However, travelers should be aware that gorilla trekking permits are expensive (currently $1,500 per person) and the country generally positions itself as a higher-end destination compared to some of its East African neighbors.

How to travel to Rwanda

Most international visitors arrive in Rwanda through Kigali International Airport, which has connections to major African cities and some European hubs. Airlines serving Rwanda include RwandAir (the national carrier), Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Qatar Airways. Visa on arrival is available for many nationalities at a cost of RWF 51,000 (£25.87). Overland entry is possible from neighboring countries, with border crossings from Uganda (Gatuna/Katuna), Tanzania (Rusumo) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Gisenyi/Goma). Bus services connect Kigali with Kampala (Uganda), Nairobi (Kenya) and other regional cities.

Access summary

  • Kigali: Fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL) from regional/global hubs.
  • Volcanoes NP/Musanze: Drive 2–3 hours from Kigali; tours include transfers.
  • Nyungwe/Akagera parks: Access via Kigali by road or domestic flight where available.

Where to stay in Rwanda

Accommodation in Rwanda ranges from luxury lodges near national parks to mid-range hotels and budget guesthouses. Kigali offers the widest selection, including international chains and boutique hotels. Near Volcanoes National Park, several high-end lodges cater to gorilla trekkers, while Lake Kivu has beachfront resorts and hotels. Budget options are available in major towns, though quality can vary. Advance booking is essential during peak season (June-September) and for properties near gorilla trekking areas.

How to get around Rwanda

Getting around Rwanda is relatively straightforward due to the country's small size and well-maintained roads. In Kigali, motorcycle taxis (motos) are ubiquitous and affordable for short distances, while regular taxis provide more comfort at higher prices. For intercity travel, buses operated by companies like Virunga Express and Ritco connect major towns and cities with regular schedules. For visiting national parks and remote areas, hiring a private vehicle with a driver or joining organized tours is recommended. The country's compact size means most destinations are within a few hours' drive of each other, making day trips possible from central locations.
