Best cherry blossom destinations in South America

Highland city park paths and colorful spring blossom avenues in South America

Cherry blossoms are not native to South America, but Japanese immigrant communities have successfully planted Yoshino and other cherry varieties throughout the continent since the late 19th century. The displays are concentrated in temperate regions with proper winter chill periods, primarily in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay.

Where they do grow, entire neighborhoods or parks can turn pink for a couple of weeks each spring, sometimes with small local festivals built around the bloom. Timing runs on the region's own calendar, since spring falls several months apart from where cherry blossoms are usually associated, so it helps to check well ahead of a trip.

Bloom dates shift a little every year, so checking recent updates before booking makes a real difference. The destinations on our list for South America highlight the handful of spots where the tradition has truly taken root.

City in Argentina
Buenos Aires
Where Tango and Culture Thrive
The Japanese Garden in Palermo is the place to see sakura in this city. The trees flower in winter and the blossoms last only about a week to ten days. The garden stands at Avenida Berro and Avenida Casares and opens daily from morning until early evening. Check bloom reports before going.
City in Chile
Santiago
A vibrant city between mountains
High above the city in Parque Metropolitano a Japanese garden covers about 1.1 acres. Cherry trees there bloom in October. Architect Tadashi Asahi designed it and a renovation in 2019 added waterfalls and lagoons. Entry is free and the cable car stops between Oasis and Tupahue are close.
City in Brazil
São Paulo
A vibrant mix of culture and cuisine
Each year in early August the Festa das Cerejeiras fills Parque do Carmo in Itaquera. The 46th edition in 2026 ran from 31 July to 2 August with free entry. The park holds one of the largest cherry groves in Brazil. Crowds are large at weekends so arrive early.
City in Argentina
San Carlos de Bariloche
Argentina’s Alpine Wonderland
Cherry trees are among the exotic species planted in town and they flower early in spring alongside tulips and daffodils. The display is modest compared with Brazil or Japan. Retama broom turns roadsides yellow a little later in the season. Lake and mountain views add to a spring walk.
City in Brazil
Curitiba
Green City of Urban Innovation
In 1993 the Japanese emperor donated 120 cherry trees for the renovation of Praça do Japão. Curitiba sent ipê trees in return. Seeds from those trees have since spread the species widely. Now more than 2,000 cherry trees line Rua XV de Novembro, Avenida Sete de Setembro and the Jardim Botânico.
