Why travel to Danakil Depression?
The Danakil Depression offers a true sense of adventure and exploration unlike anywhere else on Earth. At Dallol, you'll witness an otherworldly landscape that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie – a kaleidoscopic display of acidic hot springs and complex salt deposits with vibrant reds, yellows, greens and blues formed by water heated by underlying magma. Erta Ale, one of just six active lava lakes on Earth and the world's lowest-lying volcano, provides the thrilling opportunity to stand at the edge of an active crater and potentially witness the hypnotic glow of molten rock below (though a 2017 eruption means lava is now rarely visible). The salt plains of Karum Salt Lake offer another fascinating experience, where you can watch the Afar people harvest salt using traditional methods. However, this adventure comes with significant challenges. The heat is extreme and often dizzying, with little shade available. Tours are expensive (typically $400-600 per person) due to the requirement for multiple 4x4 vehicles, armed guards and local Afar guides. There are absolutely no facilities in this remote region – no hotels, restaurants, electricity or showers – and you'll be camping in basic, makeshift sites. The journey involves long, bumpy drives on dirt tracks and the 3-4 hour hike to Erta Ale's crater is physically demanding. While security has improved, a military escort is still mandatory for all tours. Despite these challenges, for those seeking a truly unique landscape that few travelers ever experience, the Danakil Depression delivers an unforgettable adventure.
Knowledge before you go
- Join organized tours only; solo travel forbidden.
- Prepare for extreme heat over 50°C; stay hydrated and use sun protection always.
- Armed guards mandatory due to security risks; follow guides strictly in remote areas.
- Visit Erta Ale volcano at night to avoid daytime heat; bring headlamp and light sleeping bag.

These tours must be arranged in advance, as they require permits, multiple vehicles and coordination with local authorities.

Where to stay in Danakil Depression
There are no permanent accommodations in the Danakil Depression. All overnight stays are in basic, makeshift campsites with no facilities – no showers, no electricity and very rudimentary toilet arrangements. Tour operators provide sleeping mats and sometimes tents, though many visitors sleep under the stars due to the heat. All supplies, including water, food and camping equipment, are brought in from Mekele.
