Active volcanic fields and high-altitude caldera tracks in Africa

The East African Rift runs through some of the continent's most active volcanic terrain, producing rare features like naturally flowing lava lakes found in only a handful of places worldwide. The region remains one of the most geologically active stretches of the continent.

The destinations on this list range from active volcanoes still regularly monitored for eruption risk to dormant peaks now climbed primarily for the views from their summit craters. Both demand serious respect for genuinely dangerous terrain.

Hiring a certified local guide is essential rather than optional at most of these sites, given the real volcanic hazards involved in close-range visits. Local guiding companies can advise on which craters are safely accessible at any given time. Checking current activity advisories shortly before a visit also matters considerably, since conditions at active sites can change quickly.
