Active rift valley steam vents and volcanic plains in Africa

Africa's geothermal activity is concentrated along the East African Rift System, one of the world's most significant active geological features, where the slow separation of tectonic plates has produced a chain of hot springs, geysers, fumaroles and hyperalkaline lakes running from the Red Sea south through the continent's eastern highlands. The rift's geothermal landscapes are among the most visually dramatic and ecologically distinctive on earth, combining geological activity with wildlife environments found nowhere else.

The alkaline hot spring lakes of the rift attract extraordinary concentrations of flamingos and other wildlife drawn by the mineral-rich waters, adding a natural history dimension that distinguishes the African geothermal experience from equivalents elsewhere. Hot spring bathing infrastructure is less developed than in other geothermal regions but several destinations have established accessible soaking facilities within broader wilderness and safari settings.

Reaching the most significant geothermal sites requires organised transport and in some cases specialist guides as infrastructure outside established tourist circuits is limited. Ground stability varies at active sites and staying on marked areas is essential. Your money goes a long way across most of the region making combined geothermal and wildlife itineraries practical even when specialist logistics add to overall costs.

Danakil Depression
Earth's Hottest, Most Alien Landscape
Hot acidic salty fluids reach the surface at Dallol, a salt volcano on the central salt plain. They build colourful formations in shades set by dissolved salts and iron. The depression is far below sea level and has the highest year round average temperatures on Earth. Rain is rare.

Explosive eruptions of Ol Doinyo Lengai were reported in 1917, 1940, 1966, 1983 and 1993. The Maasai call it the Mountain of God. It is the only volcano known to have erupted carbonatite lava in historical times. The lava turns from black to white within hours or days.

Lake Bogoria
Vibrant wildlife reflections over crystal waters
This narrow lake is about 17.6 kilometres long and 3.6 kilometres wide. About 200 hot springs line the shore. At least 10 geysers erupt up to 5 metres high at four locations. That is the highest concentration of true geysers in Africa. Water at some vents reaches 99 degrees Celsius.

Safari paradise meets coastal charm
The Olkaria Geothermal Station opened in 1981 in Hell's Gate National Park. It was the first of its kind in Africa. Later units added more power plants. The park also has hot springs, red cliffs and volcanic plugs such as Fischer's Tower. Hiking and cycling are allowed in this park.
