Why travel to Simien National Park?
The Simien Mountains offer a trekking experience unlike anywhere else in Africa, with a perfect blend of dramatic landscapes and unique wildlife encounters. As you traverse the park's network of trails, you'll be rewarded with jaw-dropping viewpoints like Imet Gogo, where panoramic vistas stretch across pinnacle peaks and deep valleys dotted with traditional grass-hut villages. The experience of watching hundreds of Gelada monkeys (often called 'bleeding heart baboons') grazing on the hillsides is alone worth the journey, while lucky visitors might spot the majestic Walia ibex or even the rare Ethiopian wolf. What makes the Simiens truly special is how they combine natural wonders with cultural experiences. Local communities still practice traditional farming on seemingly impossible terraced slopes and their way of life has changed little over centuries. The park's remoteness means you'll often have breathtaking viewpoints all to yourself, creating moments of profound connection with nature. However, be prepared for challenging conditions - the high altitude (reaching 4,550m at Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest peak), unpredictable weather and basic facilities require proper preparation and a sense of adventure.

How to travel to Simien National Park
The gateway to the Simien Mountains is the town of Debark, where the park headquarters is located. Most visitors reach Debark from Gondar, about 2 hours away by bus or private transport. Gondar is well-connected to Addis Ababa by domestic flights and long-distance buses. Alternatively, you can approach from Shire in the north, though this route has less frequent transportation and rougher roads. From Debark, you'll need to arrange transportation to the park entrance (about 20km away) through tour operators or at the park headquarters, where you'll also need to register, pay entrance fees and hire mandatory guides and scouts.
Access summary
- From Gondar Airport (GDQ): Drive via Debark to park, roughly 2–3 hours.
- From Gondar town: Private 4x4 or tour vehicle, around 2–3 hours.
- From Addis Ababa: Flight to Gondar about 1 hour, then 2–3 hour drive.
Where to stay in Simien National Park
Accommodation in the Simien Mountains ranges from basic campsites to a few upscale lodges. The three main campsites (Sankaber, Geech and Chenek) offer simple facilities with tent spaces and basic toilets but no electricity or running water. For those seeking more comfort, Simien Lodge and Limalimo Lodge provide luxury alternatives with proper beds and hot showers. Community lodges are available in some locations like Chenek. All camping equipment can be rented in Debark, though quality varies. Advance booking is essential for the lodges, especially during peak season (October-November).
