Volcanic Lake, Adventure and Hot Springs

Taupo sits on the edge of New Zealand’s North Island where Lake Taupo stretches wide under mountain views. The town is known for its geothermal activity with hot springs and geysers nearby, creating a landscape shaped by volcanic forces. Visitors can walk along the lake shore or explore trails that pass waterfalls and native forests. In summer, outdoor activities like swimming in thermal pools are popular, while winter brings quieter moments under clear skies. Why travel to Taupō?

Taupō is a dream for outdoor lovers and anyone who wants to experience the wild side of New Zealand’s North Island. The lake itself is an ancient volcanic crater, perfect for kayaking, sailing or cruising to see the striking Māori Rock Carvings. Huka Falls, just north of town, is a must-see for its thundering blue water. There’s also world-class trout fishing, mountain biking, geothermal walks and easy access to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing – one of the best day hikes in the world. The town is friendly and full of good cafés and it’s a great base for exploring the central North Island. But a few things to keep in mind: Taupō’s weather is famously changeable – rain and chilly nights can catch you off guard, even in summer. The area is active volcanically, but eruptions are extremely rare. It’s a popular destination, so book ahead in peak season. Some activities (like skydiving or jet boating) can be pricey and the town gets busy during school holidays. Still, Taupō’s scenery, adventure and geothermal wonders make it a highlight of any New Zealand trip.
