Why travel to Cairns?

Cairns is the ultimate launchpad for exploring the Great Barrier Reef, with reef tours, snorkeling and diving trips leaving daily. But there’s so much more: take the scenic railway or Skyrail to Kuranda, wander through lush rainforests, cool off at the Esplanade Lagoon or chase waterfalls in the nearby hills. The city’s vibrant food scene, buzzing nightlife and rich Indigenous culture add extra flavor to your stay. Just be mindful of the tropical weather – wet season (Nov–Apr) brings heavy rain and humidity and stinger season means you’ll need to use designated swimming areas. The sun is strong year-round and some wildlife (like crocodiles and jellyfish) can be dangerous, so always heed local advice and signage.

Knowledge before you go

  • Swim only where advised; stingers and crocs are real.
  • Plan reef trips ahead; weather and sea conditions can cancel boats at short notice.
  • Pack strong sunscreen and rain protection; tropical heat, humidity and downpours hit hard.
  • Use Cairns as a base: day-trip the reef, then spend a separate day in the Daintree.
