Classical Theatre Festival in the Roman Theatre, July to August, evening performances
July and August often exceed 38°C: visit the Roman sites early morning or late afternoon

Why travel to Mérida?

Travelers come to Mérida for its astonishing Roman heritage. The city boasts some of the best-preserved ruins in Spain, including a magnificent Roman theater that still hosts performances, a sprawling amphitheater, the Temple of Diana and the awe-inspiring Acueducto de los Milagros. The National Museum of Roman Art pulls it all together with world-class exhibits. Beyond the ruins, Mérida’s lively plazas, Moorish Alcazaba and riverside parks give the city a welcoming, lived-in feel. Foodies will love the blend of Extremaduran and Portuguese flavors. A few things to know: Summers are extremely hot (often over 35°C), so plan sightseeing for early mornings or evenings and bring sun protection. Some sites involve a lot of walking and uneven ground, so comfortable shoes are a must. The city is compact, but some ruins are spread out, so a bit of planning helps. English is spoken in tourist areas, but a little Spanish goes a long way. Mérida is safe, but as in any city, watch your valuables in busy places.
