Why travel to Bansko?

Bansko is Bulgaria’s premier ski destination, with over 70 km of well-groomed slopes, affordable lift passes and a vibrant après-ski scene that rivals bigger Alpine resorts – but at a fraction of the cost. The town is just as appealing in summer, with mountain biking, hiking to Vihren Peak and soaking in nearby hot springs. The old town’s wooden houses and mehanas (taverns) offer a taste of authentic Bulgarian culture, while the Sunday market and local spas add to the laid-back vibe. It’s not all perfect: Bansko can get crowded, especially at the gondola and main lifts during weekends and holidays – expect queues at peak times. The resort is best for beginners and intermediates; advanced skiers will find fewer challenges unless they venture off-piste with a guide. The town’s rapid growth means a contrast between the glitzy new area and the atmospheric old town and some visitors find the nightlife a bit rowdy. Still, for value, scenery and variety, Bansko is one of Eastern Europe’s best mountain escapes.
