High-altitude crags and remote bouldering walls in Africa

Africa is one of the most underrated continents for climbing, offering everything from striking granite peaks to sun-baked sandstone that is well worth seeking out.

The range here can surprise first-time visitors. Some climbers come for high altitude routes that test endurance as much as skill, while others prefer shorter days on rock close to the coast, followed by a swim to cool off. Beginners can usually find a guided route to start on, while experienced climbers will find plenty of routes that still push their limits. Weather and access vary a lot across the continent, so a bit of planning goes a long way.

The climbing destinations on our list for Africa combine famous peaks that draw climbers from around the world with lesser known spots. Either way, the scenery alone makes the trip worthwhile.
