Why travel to Carnac?

Carnac offers a rare combination of profound history and relaxed beach life. The megalithic sites are truly mind-boggling - rows upon rows of ancient standing stones (menhirs) stretching across the landscape, creating one of the most extraordinary prehistoric sites in Europe. Currently being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status, these alignments have puzzled archaeologists for centuries. Beyond the stones, Carnac transforms into a traditional yet elegant seaside resort with beautiful beaches, pine forests and wellness options including thalassotherapy spas. However, be prepared for the town's dual personality. The beach area (Carnac Plage) and the historic town center (Carnac Ville) have distinctly different vibes and are separated by a short distance. During peak summer months, the beaches can get crowded and parking becomes challenging. The megalithic sites have restricted access during high season, with guided tours required for close-up viewing, which might frustrate some independent travelers. Weather can also be unpredictable, as with much of Brittany, so pack accordingly even in summer.

  • Climb Tumulus Saint-Michel for panoramic views over stones and coastal scenery.
  • Explore Maison des Mégalithes first; it provides essential maps and context for self-guided walks.

Where to stay in Carnac

Carnac offers a range of accommodation options from elegant hotels and spa resorts near the beach to charming guesthouses in the town center. There are also numerous vacation rentals and camping sites in the surrounding area. The beach area (Carnac Plage) tends to be more lively and tourist-oriented, while the town center (Carnac Ville) offers a quieter, more authentic experience. Book well in advance for the summer season.

How to get around Carnac

Carnac is relatively compact but has two distinct areas - the historic town center and the beach resort area (Carnac Plage), which are about 2 km apart. Walking is pleasant for short distances, but renting a bicycle is ideal for exploring the area, including the megalithic sites. During summer, a local shuttle called 'Carnavette' connects key points. Cars are convenient but parking can be difficult in high season, especially near beaches and popular sites.
