Why travel to Trang?
Trang is perfect for travelers seeking Thailand's natural beauty without the overwhelming tourism of places like Phuket or Krabi. The province's islands are the main draw – Koh Muk with its famous Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot), where you swim through a dark tunnel that opens to a hidden beach surrounded by vertical limestone cliffs; Koh Kradan with its world-class beaches and snorkeling; and Koh Libong, where you might spot endangered dugongs feeding in protected waters. On the mainland, Tham Le Khao Kob offers an adventure through cave tunnels so narrow you'll need to lie down in your boat to pass through – an experience aptly called 'going under the dragon's belly.' But Trang isn't just about natural wonders. The provincial capital is worth a visit for food lovers, with early morning dim sum, locally-grown Robusta coffee and the province's signature roast pork. However, be aware that some resorts close during the early high season (mid-November) and the best time to visit is between December and May. If you're claustrophobic, you might want to skip Tham Le Khao Kob with its narrow passages. Also, while Trang is less developed than other Thai tourist destinations, this means fewer amenities and English speakers outside the main tourist areas.

Knowledge before you go
- Use Trang Town as base; islands and caves are day-trips.
- Start early for local markets and Trang-style dim sum breakfasts before tours and boat departures.
- Plan island-hopping to Koh Mook, Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai; seas can be rough in monsoon.
- For Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot), bring a dry bag and go with a tour at quieter times.
How to travel to Trang
Trang is accessible by air, with direct flights to Trang Airport (TST) from Bangkok. Alternatively, you can take a train from Bangkok on the Southern Line that has a special offshoot to Trang. For those already in southern Thailand, buses connect Trang to major cities like Krabi, Phuket and Hat Yai. From Trang city, boats to the islands depart from several piers, with Pakmeng Pier being one of the main departure points.
Access summary
- From Trang Airport (TST): 15–20 minutes by taxi or hotel transfer.
- From Krabi: Minivan or bus about 3–4 hours via Highway 4.
- From Phuket: Minivan or bus roughly 5–6 hours, often via Krabi.
Where to stay in Trang
Accommodation in Trang ranges from simple guesthouses in Trang city to mid-range and luxury resorts on the islands. Koh Muk is the most developed island with the widest range of options, while Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai offer more upscale resorts. Koh Libong has fewer tourists and more basic accommodation. Note that some resorts close during the early high season (mid-November), so check availability if traveling during this time.
