Best travel destinations for food allergies in Asia

Asia has real strengths for allergy conscious travelers once you know what to look for, since several of its cuisines are naturally suited to specific diets.

Rice based diets across much of East and Southeast Asia make gluten free eating easier than it first appears, once soy sauce and certain noodles are ruled out. Japan is a genuine standout for allergy planning, with printed allergy cards widely available and many restaurants trained to answer detailed questions about ingredients. Peanuts and shellfish do show up often in the region's cooking, so it helps to ask directly rather than assume a dish is safe. A few key phrases in the local language make a real difference almost everywhere here.

The destinations on our list for Asia reflect these strengths, favoring places where eating out can still feel easy and enjoyable.

City in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur
A fusion of cultures and skyscrapers
Malaysia's Food Regulations 1985 require ingredients known to cause hypersensitivity to be declared on labels. Five groups are covered, including gluten cereals, nuts, fish and shellfish, milk and eggs. A Ministry of Health guideline defines hypersensitivity to include itching, swelling, vomiting, asthma, chest pain and fainting.
City in Japan
Tokyo
Japan's capital of temples, towers and food
Restaurants and food stalls in Japan have no legal duty to disclose allergens. Only packaged foods must carry allergen labels. Travellers can show a printed card such as the Food Allergy Communication Sheet before ordering. Yasashii Clinic Hiroo Shirokane and Tokyo Business Clinic in Tokyo can help with EpiPen prescriptions.
City in Taiwan
Taipei
A vibrant blend of old and new
Taiwan expanded its allergen labelling list from six to 11 items effective 1 July 2020. The list includes mango and sesame along with crustaceans, peanuts, milk, eggs, nuts, gluten cereals, soybeans, fish and sulphites. The TFDA announced the revision on 21 August 2018. Gluten cereals exclude glucose syrup and maltodextrin.
City in Thailand
Bangkok
The city of contrasts and chaos
Thailand has mandated allergen warnings on packaged food since 2014. A 2021 study found 7.22 percent of allergens undeclared afterwards, down from 18.9 percent. Peanuts hide in Massaman curry, pad Thai and som tam. Shrimp paste is common in curry paste. A card written in Thai helps at restaurants.
City in South Korea
Seoul
Where Tradition Meets High-Tech Marvels
One academic review says Korean rules require 19 items covering 22 foods to be declared on labels. The list includes pork, peach, tomato and squid. Almond, cashew and kiwi are not on it. Kimchi is often made with fermented shrimp or fish sauce. Jeon are made to order so cooks can leave ingredients out.
Country
Singapore
Tropical city-state of hawker food and gardens
Prepacked food labels must declare common allergens. These include cereals with gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk and tree nuts. Sulphites count at 10 milligrams per kilogram or more. Allergens can appear in the ingredient list or under an Allergy information statement. Accidental contamination does not trigger the declaration.
