Thailand's paradise with growing pains

Koh Lipe sits in Thailand’s southern Andaman Sea, close to the Malaysian border. The island spans about 20 square kilometers with white sand beaches and shallow turquoise waters. It has a small population, mostly Thai and Muslim residents, who run family-run guesthouses and seafood restaurants. Diving spots include coral reefs and shipwrecks within easy reach of the shore. Daily ferries connect Koh Lipe to mainland ports like Pak Bara and Surat Thani. The climate stays warm year-round with average temperatures near 28 degrees Celsius.

Why travel to Ko Lipe?

Ko Lipe offers an intoxicating mix of pristine beaches and underwater wonders that's hard to find elsewhere in Thailand. The island's three main beaches each have distinct personalities: Sunrise Beach with its beach bars and morning views, Sunset Beach for evening ocean vistas and Pattaya Beach with its long stretch of white sand. The crystal-clear waters make for perfect snorkeling and diving conditions, with colorful fish and coral reefs accessible right from the shore in many spots. What makes Ko Lipe special is its relatively small size and laid-back atmosphere compared to Thailand's more famous islands. It's not a party destination, attracting a different kind of traveler seeking relaxation and natural beauty. You can explore the entire island within 30 minutes by bicycle, hike through jungle paths to discover hidden beaches or take a day trip to neighboring Koh Adang for spectacular viewpoints. However, be aware that Ko Lipe has changed significantly with tourism development - what once had just 23 accommodations in 2006 now has over 100 hotels and resorts, bringing crowds and infrastructure challenges to this once-pristine paradise.

Knowledge before you go

  • No cars on island. Use longtail boats between beaches.
  • Book ferries early from Pak Bara or Langkawi; no direct airport access requires advance planning.
  • National park fee of 200 THB applies on arrival; pay at immigration dock for Tarutao Marine Park access.
  • Visit Sunrise Beach early morning for stunning sunrises and fewer crowds before day-trippers arrive by boat.

How to travel to Ko Lipe

Reaching Ko Lipe requires some effort as it's located closer to Malaysia than mainland Thailand. The only way to access the island is via speedboat, which can be a rough journey depending on sea conditions. During high season (November-May), speedboats operate from Pak Bara pier on the mainland, taking about 1-2 hours. Alternatively, you can reach Ko Lipe from other islands like Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi or Phuket via island-hopping speedboat services. Be prepared for potentially bumpy rides, especially when the sea is choppy - some travelers report being launched from their seats and experiencing quite frightening journeys back to the mainland.

Access summary

  • From Hat Yai Airport: Minivan to Pak Bara Pier (2 hours) + speedboat (1.5 hours).
  • From Bangkok: Flight to Hat Yai, then van–ferry combo, around 5–7 hours total.
  • From Langkawi (Malaysia): Seasonal direct speedboats, roughly 1.5–2 hours including immigration.

Where to stay in Ko Lipe

Ko Lipe's accommodation options have exploded from just 23 properties in 2006 to over 100 today, ranging from budget bungalows to luxury resorts. Most accommodations are concentrated around the three main beaches, with Pattaya Beach offering the most options. Sunrise Beach tends to have more upscale resorts, while Sunset Beach has quieter, more secluded properties. For a more authentic experience, consider staying near the Walking Street area where you'll be close to restaurants and shops. Prices are generally higher than other Thai destinations due to the island's remote location and booking well in advance is essential during high season.

How to get around Ko Lipe

Ko Lipe is small enough to explore entirely on foot, with most of the island accessible via a 30-minute walk. The main Walking Street connects Pattaya Beach to Sunrise Beach and transforms into a pedestrian-only zone after sunset. For those who prefer not to walk, sidecar motorbike taxis are available to transport you between beaches and accommodations. Bicycles can also be rented for exploring the island, though the terrain can be hilly in parts. There are no cars or public transportation systems on the island.
