Coral reefs, mountain trails and quiet beaches

Timor-Leste is the eastern half of the island of Timor between Indonesia and Australia, with a small exclave called Oecusse on the western side. Visitors can dive the reefs of Atauro Island, climb Mount Ramelau for sunrise and see the Cristo Rei statue above the capital Dili. Culture is a mix of Timorese, Portuguese and Catholic traditions and the US dollar is the everyday currency. Roads are rough and tourist services are basic, so it suits flexible and adventurous travellers. A week covers Dili, Atauro and one trip into the mountains.

Why travel to East Timor?

Reefs and beaches come first here. Atauro Island, a short ferry ride from Dili, is known for diving and snorkelling with a huge variety of reef fish. Whales and dolphins pass through local waters. Jaco Island at the eastern tip is a sacred island with pale beaches and clear water. The coast near Dili has reefs close to shore, so snorkelling needs little more than a mask. The interior is the second draw. Mount Ramelau is 2,963 m high and is a popular sunrise trek above cloud forests and highland villages in coffee country. Baucau on the eastern plateau has colonial architecture, hot springs and coastal cliffs. Nino Konis Santana National Park covers reef and rainforest and has sea turtles and more than 200 bird species. The country has no inscribed UNESCO World Heritage sites. Culture is easy to find because women weave tais cloth on backstrap looms and each municipality has its own patterns. Sacred houses called uma lulik are in the east and the cathedral in Dili hosts large Holy Week processions. Dili has the Cristo Rei statue and a quiet waterfront. Plan at least a week, though the rainy months from November to April make mountain roads difficult.

Knowledge before you go

  • Bring US dollars in cash because few places accept cards.
  • Pay the visa fee in cash on arrival and carry clean notes printed after 2009.
  • Ask locals before you swim anywhere because crocodiles live in rivers and on some beaches.
  • Hire a 4WD with a driver for Mount Ramelau and Jaco Island because tracks are rough.

How to travel to East Timor

Most visitors arrive by air at Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili, which handles a small number of international flights from regional hubs. Few airlines serve the country, so book early and allow for changes in schedules. Taxis wait outside the airport and a sign lists fixed fares by area. By land, the main crossing from Indonesia is at Batugade near Atambua, with visas on arrival or in advance from a Timor-Leste embassy or consulate in Denpasar or Kupang. A separate crossing at Wini links Oecusse with West Timor. Oecusse needs its own visa. A tourist visa is issued on arrival at the Dili airport or seaport for a fee payable in cash in US dollars. It's valid for 30 days and can be extended once. Your passport must be valid for six months and have two blank pages. Dili airport is the simplest way in.

Access summary

  • Fly into Dili (DIL) from Bali, Darwin, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore.
  • From Indonesia: overland bus from Kupang/Atambua to Dili land border.
  • National carrier Aero Dili based in Dili; no major alliance hub.

Where to stay in East Timor

Dili has most of the country's accommodation, from simple guesthouses and hostels to mid-range hotels and a handful of upscale places along the waterfront. The coast road west of the centre and the area near the Cristo Rei beach have the best sea views and restaurants. Book ahead and check what's included in the rate. Outside the capital, choices are smaller and Atauro Island has beach lodges and community guesthouses on the beach, many run by local families, plus dive resorts. Baucau has small hotels in the old town and on the hilltop. Near Mount Ramelau, simple guesthouses in Hato Builico put you close to the sunrise climb. Lospalos and Com have basic rooms for travellers heading to the national park. Facilities are often basic and power or water can be unreliable. Few places accept credit cards, so bring enough US dollars in cash. Book ahead for Holy Week, major holidays and the dive season on Atauro.

How to get around East Timor

Getting around Timor-Leste takes patience. Roads are rough and schedules change, so plan extra time for every trip.

In Dili:
Numbered microlets (small shared minibuses) follow fixed routes and cost very little.
Tap a coin on the metal handrail when you want to get off. Taxis operate mainly in daylight. Blue taxis use meters and can be booked, while yellow taxis require a negotiated fare. City fares are a few dollars and trips from the airport cost more.

Buses and rural routes:
Crowded buses run to Maliana, Suai, Baucau, Viqueque and Lospalos and mostly leave early in the morning once full.
Rural routes use microlets, trucks and motorbike taxis.

By car:
A car with a driver is the best way to see the country.
A standard car works around Dili but Mount Ramelau and Jaco Island need a strong 4WD. The north coast road is in good condition while inland roads vary.

Ferries and flights:
Ferries run from Dili to Atauro several days a week and to Oecusse twice a week.
Small planes serve some towns. Check schedules locally because they change often and roads can become impassable in the rainy season.

Food in East Timor

Timorese food is simple and built on grilled fish, rice, corn, cassava and greens. Ikan sabuko is a fish dish of tuna cooked with tamarind and spices. Ikan pepes is fish steamed in leaves and batar da'an is a stew of corn, beans and pumpkin. Sambal, a chilli paste, is served with most meals. Portuguese influence shows in grilled meat, bread rolls and pastries.

Timor-Leste is also known for its coffee, which is shade-grown, hand-picked and sun-dried. Cafes in Dili serve strong local coffee that has a reputation among specialty buyers.

Dili has restaurants serving Timorese, Portuguese, Indonesian and international food as well as small stalls. Outside the capital, food stalls and guesthouse meals are the main options, so ask your host about meals ahead of time. Pork is common. Bring snacks for long drives and drink bottled water only.

Safety information overview

General safety
6
Timor-Leste is calmer than in the past but robbery, assault and gang fights occur, mostly at night. Avoid crowds and protests, take hotel-booked taxis and keep valuables hidden. Roads are poor, motorbike accidents are common and crocodiles live in some waters.
Health & Medical
4
Medical services are limited, especially outside Dili. Serious cases need evacuation to Australia or Singapore. Dengue, rabies and typhoid are risks. Insurance with evacuation cover is essential. Emergency ambulances are unreliable, so get to a hospital yourself if you can.
Accessibility
3
Accessibility is very limited. Pavements in Dili are narrow or missing and open drains and manholes are a hazard. Roads are rough and mountain tracks are steep. Boats and ferries have steps. Travellers with reduced mobility need a private vehicle and careful planning.
Tap water
3
Tap water isn't safe to drink, so use bottled or boiled water. Bottled water is sold in Dili and larger towns but can be hard to find in villages. Bring a filter or purification tablets when travelling to remote areas or hiking in the mountains.
