Why travel to Sierra Leone?
What makes Sierra Leone truly special is its remarkable combination of natural beauty and cultural authenticity largely untouched by mass tourism. The country offers stunning white-sand beaches along its Atlantic coastline that rival those of more popular destinations but without the crowds. Inland, you'll find lush mountains, rainforests and wildlife areas that provide opportunities for hiking, bird watching and connecting with nature in its purest form. Beyond the natural attractions, Sierra Leone's rich cultural heritage and resilient spirit create meaningful travel experiences. The country has overcome significant challenges, including a civil war that ended in 2002 and an Ebola outbreak in 2014-2016, emerging with a renewed focus on rebuilding and developing tourism. While infrastructure remains basic in many areas and healthcare facilities are limited, the genuine warmth of Sierra Leoneans and the country's raw beauty make it a rewarding destination for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures.

Knowledge before you go
- Avoid walking alone after dark; arrange transport ahead.
- Skip informal public transport; stick to prearranged cars and reputable drivers for longer trips.
- Swim cautiously: strong currents, no lifeguards and conditions change quickly along the coast.
- Expect frequent checkpoints and occasional unofficial roadblocks; stay calm, carry ID and travel mostly in daylight.
How to travel to Sierra Leone
Most international visitors arrive in Sierra Leone through Freetown International Airport (FNA), located in Lungi across the bay from the capital city. The airport receives flights from several West African cities and European destinations including Brussels and London. From the airport, travelers must cross the bay to reach Freetown, either by ferry (cheapest but slowest), water taxi (faster but more expensive) or helicopter service (fastest but costliest). Alternatively, some travelers enter Sierra Leone by land from Guinea or Liberia, though border crossings can be time-consuming and bureaucratic. Visas are required for most nationalities and should be arranged in advance through Sierra Leonean embassies or consulates.
Access summary
- Fly into Lungi Airport (FNA); ferry or speedboat to Freetown.
- From Guinea/Liberia: Overland buses or flights to FNA.
- No major national airline; flights via Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc.
Where to stay in Sierra Leone
Accommodation in Sierra Leone ranges from international-standard hotels in Freetown to basic guesthouses in smaller towns and eco-lodges near beaches and national parks. The capital offers the widest selection, including business hotels catering to NGOs and government officials. Along the peninsula beaches, several mid-range and boutique resorts have developed in recent years. In more remote areas, options become very limited and basic. Advance booking is recommended, especially during the dry season (November-April) when tourism is at its peak.
