Knowledge before you go
- Arrange trusted airport transport; scams and overcharging happen.
- Keep valuables minimal in Dakar, especially after dark; pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common.
- Avoid night driving between towns; rainy-season flooding and poor lighting make roads riskier.
- If visiting Casamance, stick to main roads in daylight; ask locally about landmine risk areas.
How to travel to Senegal
Most international visitors arrive in Senegal through Blaise Diagne International Airport, located about 50km from Dakar. The airport receives flights from major European cities, other African destinations and limited connections from North America and the Middle East. Airlines serving Senegal include Air France, Brussels Airlines, TAP Portugal, Royal Air Maroc and the national carrier Air Sénégal. Overland entry is possible from neighboring countries like The Gambia, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, though border procedures can sometimes be time-consuming. Ferry services connect Dakar with Ziguinchor in the Casamance region, offering an alternative to road travel through The Gambia.
Access summary
- Dakar: Fly to Blaise Diagne (DSS) from Europe, North Africa, Americas, regionally.
- Saly/Petite Côte: Arrive Dakar DSS, then 1–2 hour road transfer south.
- Casamance (Ziguinchor/Cap Skirring): Domestic flights or long-distance buses from Dakar.
Where to stay in Senegal
Accommodation in Senegal ranges from international hotel chains in Dakar to boutique hotels, eco-lodges and basic guesthouses throughout the country. Dakar offers the widest selection, including luxury options along the Corniche. Coastal areas like Saly and Cap Skirring feature beach resorts, while the Sine-Saloum Delta is known for its eco-lodges built in harmony with nature. In more remote areas, accommodations become more basic but often provide authentic experiences. Advance booking is recommended during the high season (November-May), especially for higher-end properties.
