Why travel to Libya?
Libya captivates visitors with its remarkable historical treasures that rival any in the Mediterranean yet remain blissfully uncrowded. The country boasts five UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Leptis Magna, one of the most spectacular and well-preserved Roman cities in existence. The ancient Greek ruins at Cyrene and the Phoenician-Roman port of Sabratha offer glimpses into Libya's rich past as a crossroads of civilizations. Beyond its archaeological wonders, Libya's natural landscapes are equally mesmerizing. The golden dunes of the Sahara Desert stretch endlessly southward, while the Acacus Mountains showcase prehistoric rock art dating back 12,000 years. Coastal areas offer pristine beaches along the Mediterranean. What makes Libya truly special is the genuine hospitality of its people, who often shower visitors with care and warmth despite the country's challenging recent history.

How to travel to Libya
Access to Libya has been challenging but is gradually improving. As of March 2024, Libya launched an e-Visa system making entry somewhat easier. Most visitors enter through Mitiga International Airport or Misrata Airport, as Tripoli International Airport remains closed following conflict damage. These airports offer connections to countries like Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia and Turkey. Visitors traveling to Libya for tourism are typically required to convert LYD 1,515 (£176.64) upon arrival unless traveling as part of a guided tour or sponsored by a Libyan citizen. Land borders with Tunisia (Ras Jdayr) and Egypt (Bay of As Sallum) are occasionally open to foreign travelers, though conditions can change rapidly.
Access summary
- Tripoli/Leptis Magna: Fly to Tripoli (Mitiga/International) from regional hubs.
- From neighbors (Tunisia, Egypt, Tunisia desert routes): Overland by car, organized tours.
- Libyan Airlines and Libyan Wings based in Tripoli; no global alliance membership.
Where to stay in Libya
Accommodation options in Libya are limited and concentrated in major cities like Tripoli and Benghazi. International-standard hotels exist but are few in number. In more remote areas and historical sites, basic guesthouses or arranged homestays might be the only options. For desert exploration, camping is common and typically arranged through tour operators who provide necessary equipment and security.
